New Adhesive Being Developed

09/22/2014 1:31 PM

As anybody who has had to clean the mussels off the bottom of their boat knows, these creatures almost become part of the structure...now some bright and creative souls have discovered a way to use this to our advantage....unfortunately keeping them from sticking to the bottom of your boat is still an ongoing struggle....

"The researchers took the natural proteins secreted by mussels and combined them with bacterial proteins to create a new hybrid material. The bacteria act as "factories" of a sort, a new way to synthesize biological materials with multiple components. The new adhesive may have applications ranging from ship repair to closing surgical wounds."

Oh how I "fondly" remember scraping barnacles off of the bottom of the boat thinking that these little guys sure know how to stick to things. Glad that somebody is actually figuring out how to use Mother Nature's own "super glue"...

I remember several years ago about an adhesive that used the properties of barnacles, combined with soybean protein to produce a waterproof glue that was superior to anything else at the time.

Plywood bonded with this glue could be boiled with no effect to the adhesion.

I do not remember the name of it right now, but I do remember I tried to purchase some for woodworking projects, but was told it was not available except to furniture manufactures, plywood manufacturers and such.

Does anyone remember the name of this product or the distributor of it?

Thanks in advance for all help.

This glue technology is tremendous! I don't remember the name of it, probably not a urethane type glue, and not gorilla glue. The way I look at it is this: if you want a glue joint to hold, you need (1) very clean correct angle cuts, and (2) biscuits to provide more surface area for the connection.

I usually glue and screw.

Now find me something in nature to make metal so slick that nothing in water will stick to the metal, and not interfere with heat transfer.

Trust me if you could defeat barnacles with anything, it would have been found over the last 2000 years...copper is the best thing I've heard.....this glue will stick to pretty much anything wet or dry.....

Yes, and based on this type of research, products are now available to spray on work boots, gloves, etc. that will positively keep them dry and clean in all conditions. Not sure how often this has to be applied.

One of the things I am looking at right now is de-cementing concrete-like deposits from heat exchangers, and condensers. It involves destabilizing any calcium carbonate present, as well as breaking up particle static charge bonding that holds small crystallites together into a hard material.

Got concrete? Use concrete cleaner/remover!
