Hard Left Turns

09/26/2014 11:01 PM

I'm not sure what is going on with my pickup. When I turn to the right i can turn with one finger, but when I turn left i have to put some muscle into it. Power steering fluid is full. I raised the front end and it turns both ways easy. My ball joints feel fine, there is no tire shake when i have it off the ground. My tie rods feel fine also, nice and tight. I was thinking about replacing the steering sector to see if thats the issue but wanted to get a second opinion first. Thank you for reading.

Make, model and year of truck will help, lots.

Without it, no joy.

If that's all there is, start by replacing the pump. Then work downstream from there.

You didn't accidentally run over one of those green EVs and it got stuck in the left wheel?

I don't think so. I did have some asshat rearend me a couple months ago and when the tow truck pulled us apart my tow hitch ripped off his bumper. I lol'd. Like one of those deep belly laughs. The kid didn't think it was too funny.

I suppose both front tyres are the right pressure?

Jack up, put frame on blocks, stick pry bar in hole in wheels, pry up and down and right and left. This is a standard USDOT inspection on commercial trucks. If something is wrong in suspension, likely will show up as play here. If no holes in wheels, inspect suspension carefully for loose parts.

If no loose or excessively worn parts, problem could be in the steering box.

That sounds like a lot of work. I'd eliminate tyre pressures first, particularly as our poster has made no mention of them.

Sounds like a problem with the control valve. This may help.

Your ass end is out of alignment. If you have someone follow you, they will see you are going down he road sideways, not straight.

Does the truck sit level on level ground?.

Measure left and right, front and rear.

Main thing is left-right height.

Front/rear is likely different but that is normal for a truck.

Could be a broken spring or shock.

Have a shop perform a 4 wheel alignment check.

You mentioned being rear-ended,so some hidden damage may have occurred, such as bent frame.

This will show up during the 4 wheel alignment check.

This may be covered under the insurance of the guy that hit you if you can prove it occurred during the crash.

65 lbs front 80 rear for tire pressure.

suspension is good

front and rear tires are straight, no dog tracking there

I'm going to take in next week sometime to get an alignment done. Thats about all i can do now without tearing stuff apart

I had the same problem with an IH paystar this past summer. I put it down to defective valving in the steering box or possibly in the supply lines being reinstalled incorrectly when the new engine was installed.

The hydraulic resistance when attempting a left turn that the belt would jump and chirp and slip - while the steering wheel gave corresponding jerkiness. The right turns were very smooth and with a tighter turning circle.

I had a '69 Ford F100 back around 1995 with a similar issue. We decided, IF I recall correctly, that the LH "king pin" assembly was somewhat stiff and refused to take any grease. We heated it up and got some grease in there which seemed to help. Don't imagine the front end is much different between the two trucks.

Good luck!

Years ago, I had a Pontiac Bonneville with the same problem. The steering linkages and joints were fine. Tire pressure okay. Alignment okay. Power steering pump good. We found out it was the steering box. Not too hard to change and when you do, make sure you bleed it.

Try disconnecting the arm on the steering box from the remainder of the steering linkage. If the truck still has hard lefts, you will need the steering box. If it seems OK when doing this, and all other things have checked out, you will need to have a pressure test done on the steering system. This requires a pressure gauge installed in line with the box to pump hose, and a manually turned needle valve to check for maximum pressure. This test may need to be done by Ford, or search for a repair shop with this test equipment. Good luck.
