Massive Demand for Green Vehicles does not Translate into Sales (new study)

09/22/2014 11:46 AM

Upon our readers' request, we conducted a study about the desire vs. the actual purchase of green cars and got some interesting numbers:

  • 38% of respondents are planning to purchase a green vehicle in the next 5 years;
  • 72% are stating that they believe these vehicles would save them money over time;
  • 52% indicated price as a major concern and 57% listed range of the vehicle as a concern;
  • 58% suggested they would struggle to find a charging station;
  • 76% stated that they would purchase a standard fuel vehicle as their next car purchase.

What do you think is the real cause for people not to buy green cars?

"The fleet of hybrid electric vehicles in the United States is the largest in the world. Cumulative sales since 1999 passed the 2 million mark in May 2011[5] and the 3 million milestone in October 2013.[6] "

Hybrid vehicle sales in the US is going vertical....

Desire and demand are two different things. Demand is what the customer is prepared to pay for.

Demand is what the customer is prepared to pay for.

In a perfect world, yes, but all too often now days, it is what the government can subsidize to be paid by confiscating money from others.

I desire that Porsche 918.

I demand that that people stop laughing at my Renault Fuego.

I suspect the survey is based on wishful thinking and does not reflect reality.

The 38% number is a red flag. I can't imagine 38% of the actual "market" is planning to purchase an EV or hybrid.

Hybrid sales represent 3% of the total market. EV sales are far less than that.

This is an excellent example of how you can skew a survey.

You just have to ask the right people!

Probably 38% of members of the Green EV Forum when surveyed.

Re: Massive Demand for Green Vehicles does not Translate into Sales (new study)

I recently drove a Ford C-Max rental for about 400 miles.

200, 75 MPH freeway miles and the rest 50 MPH county roads and very little city driving.

I averaged 47 MPG by driving conservatively but at the speed limit. I punched it once and was IMPRESSED by the power it had.

I wouldn't buy one, it's too small for me. I was by myself this trip.

I never considered plugging it in.

Yeah - I'd never purchase one.

It was a lot more fun converting it!

Aside from turning out being largely a government subsidy for unions and people that can afford new cars, the people that drive them are blissfully unaware of the reality.

As we shutter our coal burning plants, with few replacements on the drawing board, a massive influx of electric cars would put a huge strain on our capability to generate the power to charge them. Rolling brownouts anyone?

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2013/06/11/electric-car-fuel-cost-hybrid-government/2413249/

Along with just about everything else that's touted as being "green", electric cars are yet another thing that the government has spent billions on, despite the fact that they're not ready for prime time.

It's amazing how much smarter things turn out when not forced by government. Sadly, it appears that government has committed itself to really big batteries.

Yes but we don't have to buy electricity from outside the US....that means the vast amount of money spent on fuel stays in this country boosting the economy instead of draining it(*2=effect)....We have nearly double the capacity demand in place already...

Double the capacity demand of what? Electricity?

All I ever seem to hear about is our aging infrastructure, susceptibility to attack, rolling brownouts in the NE and CA...

If that's true, it's because we have driven manufacturing overseas, not because of any boom in electricity production.

I'm all for government investing in energy R & D, but I really hate it when they pick one or two, (particularly for political reasons), and tell us that this is the only way to the future.

The entire infrastructure is in a shambles because of our politicians.

They are the lowest form of pox. They pull down well over $200K a year for working 110 days, before bribes, and give the store away to their benefactors.

You and I drive on pot-holed hi-ways and collapsing bridges, pay 10 times what health care is worth because of the scum bags running the country. This is a non-partisan rant because all the pigs feed at the same trough, regardless of which side of the aisle the squat on.

I'm practicing restraint here, or I'd say what I really think.

The disgust with the Washington elite seems to be becoming pretty unanimous.

There's very little they haven't managed to screw up.

Here we are entering a senate race, and I can't listen to either one of them. They make me sick. Same BS I've been listening to for my entire life...and the only changes are for the worse.

I desire a Tesla roadster, a model S, a DeTomaso Pantera and a 67 Sunbeam Tiger. Can't justify the money for any of them.
