It could be the brake pedal pivot bushing binding....say this 3 times quickly and go check it....

The stick that drags on the ground to stop the Durango has lost it's spring.

Brake pedal stays down, won't come back up - JeepForum.com

ABS and brake light on - Dodge Durango Forum and Dodge Dak

brake pedal stays down
This beets the hel outa me. Maybe the break pedil return spring has broken?

Use a bungee cord hooked around the break pedal and the steering wheel. That'll pull the pedle back up.

Don't worry, you won't be on the road much longer.

Seriously, take it to a mechanic, today.

Each time? You still driving this wreck?

Oh sorry, no wreck yet, but if you still keep driving like that . . .

Simple. A lack of desire to have the thing towed to the crusher.

Almost has to be the pedal bushings. Crawl on your back, and look up at both the top pivot, and the lower pivot that transfers motion forward. Unless this thing has been under water, it should clear up with a loosening and then applying some spray lube. Tighten again and test. Good luck.

Hi

The brake rubbers are swollen this happens a lot, with age and contamination the rubbers swell and the spring tension is not enough to return the pedal.

Purge fluid before dismantle so as not to contaminate reco'ed cylinder

Hone and put a kit in it check bore for pitting (sometimes a new one is cheaper or as cheap) if pitted have it sleeved and then fit kit, Check pedal bushing and return spring

The OP stated the brakes work fine except that he must pull the pedal up. If the master cylinder had swollen rubber cups, pulling up on the brake pedal would not release the brakes. The push-rod from the booster to the master cylinder is just pushing on the piston of the master cylinder. It has no capability to pull the piston back. For that reason, I believe it must be the pedal bushings. Your comments are welcomed. Bob C.

I know this is an older post But.... Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who shared on this topic. I have a 2001 Durango I Just picked up from Auction. The brake pedal was hard to push down & the pedal would Not return back up on its own, so I would have to Lift the Brake Pedal with my left foot (very stiff both ways), after I would use the Foot Brake Pedal to slow down or stop, while driving. The Braking worked as far as stopping the Durango goes though. Also, the Brake Light would Stay On if I did not get the Brake Pedal pulled All the Way Up each time.

I sprayed W-D40 up on all the Bushings and such up underneath the dash where the top part of the Foot Brake lever Swivels. That, Surprising (lubing with W-D40) took care of the whole problem!! The brake pedal now returns to its original position after each time I apply the brakes.

Wow!! what a Savings of Money and Labor.

Thank You Everyone!!!
