High Voltage Cable Laying

10/04/2014 4:57 AM

I want to lay 33kV grade 630sqmm Aluminiumx single core armoured cable (under ground) in the plant area along the road. The length will be around 3 to 4 Km .

So 3 cable will be required ( R/Y/B Phase) there will be 2 or 3 straight through joints in each cable possibly. Please let me know if any special precaution is required for joints or any other problem expected with voltage gradient etc... for capacitance effect etc... Will it be o.k?Any experienced input is welcome.

You don't give your location so the codes you work to are unknown.

I have the UK regulations but they may not be applicable to your country so I'm not going to bother looking them out.

Don't do it. Give this job to somebody authorized and knowledgeable in power line distribution voltage requirements for your location. Only authorized professionals should work on 33,000 volt power distribution wiring between substations.

What worries me is that you apparently already have a cable route planned and a manufacturer's cable already designated but you are uncertain how to splice this cable. The acceptable splicing products and techniques should have been specified already. There are many other people you should be contacting with any questions before you contact an anonymous forum. First are the engineers for this project. Second is the manufacturer of the designated splice kit. Third is the manufacturer of the cable.

This is a job for your local qualified specialist. I'd get on the phone and talk to that individual, then I'm funny that way.

Is it XLPE or PILC?

What joint types are being used?

What terms are being used?

What are you treminating to?

What laying depth?

Direct buried, ducted?

What is the Tr for the soil?

Are the armoured cables

As long as you don't joint and terminate the cables it will all be fine.

There are special procedures and techniques required to make splices.

There is specialized training in making these splices.

You cannot get acquire this knowledge simply by reading about it.

There are also precautions when installing to prevent excessive strain and damage to

cables.

I expect a lot of problems with this job, resulting in much damage to the cable and

infrastructure,as well as potential fatalities due to incompetent installers

and ad-hoc engineers.

Turn this job over to someone that is qualified and experienced or you will be in the

liability hot seat, and you will have plenty of time to study the applicable code in your

prison cell; that is if the 300 pound pervert that you share the cell with will allow you

some personal time.

Then when you finally are released, you can intern with a qualified contractor, as an

apprentice, to learn how to apply what you read about.

Not trying to frighten you, but "facts is facts."

Good luck.

Cable laying is also considered when choosing the cross-section of power cables. You can check out here to see more details http://www.psa-outline.com/cable-selection/
