The Fastest Way To Sync iOS/Android/Windows Phones?

10/07/2014 8:34 PM

Dear members,

I'm facing a pretty interesting challenge, which is: "How to connect multiple smartphones in the quickest and simplest way and leverage their microphones for a shared recording?"

Here is a use case. I go into a meeting with a group of random (strangers) that all have smartphones, Android, iOS, Windows. Now I want to record this meeting and in doing so I would like to leverage the mic's of all the phones in the room. How can I get the phones to connect with my system, or maybe using the cloud, to capture all the recordings in one platform. The main difficulty being that the other people in the meeting do not want to spend time installing an app of any kind. They should notice almost nothing, and do little to nothing.

My ideas:

- Using the android beam technology by holding phones against each other (only works on Nexus though)

- Using some sort of bluetooth system.

- Using NFC (near field communication)?- Maybe I would have a unique URL that I can type into a webbrowser on each phone?

I'd love to have your thoughts, ideas, suggestions on this challenge, feel free to comment!

Best,Peter

Do you have any reason to believe that the other participants in your meeting would have any reason to play your silly game?

If I were in your meeting, I'd probably tell you to pound sand. I'd have no reason to let a random stranger record me in any case, especially one that uses a term like "leverage" without really understanding what leverage means.

What incentive would I have to let you use my phone to capture sound recordings and let you store them in an insecure cloud?

I'd leave your meeting if you tried to hijack my phone.

Haha,
Thanks!

I like your response. And I totally agree.

But let's assume that the example meeting I described will never take place, and you think about the technical challenge instead of the social/private challenge. That's why I posted the question in the first place. I'm not so much interested in the use case, that's just an example.

If the meeting will never take place then you don't need the facility. Why bother, when things like Skype do it already?

Just record the meeting on one phone and e-mail out copies....

Thanks for your thought.
The idea is to have separate streams coming in, so this would not be the solution. Also, I'm not focused on the recording. I'm more interested to think of cool ideas to connect the phones.

Cheers!

So you have multiple microphones, 1 for each person, wireless.....Revo makes just such a system...

"For corporate boardrooms and auditoriums, large university lecture halls, and broadcast and production studios, the rack-mountable Executive HD™ can support up to 32 (Americas and Japan) or 40 (international) microphones, each with an independent channel to operate together in one area without interference. Hold the meeting on WebEx. Everyone enters the meeting, then turn on the record function.

Hi Vermin,

Thanks!

I did think about this. Not a bad option. But still I will have to hold my phone against my head right? I'm thinking of a situation where basically people just have their phone on the table in front of them. They have a normal meeting and in the end have a record from the multiple phones.

A simple app should be able to fix this, but then you would have to install the app on every phone which makes onboarding hard again:S

Haha,

I can assure you I'm not just a geek. In fact, I'm changing the world! In small steps first. I like the idea of Forums and crowdsourcing things. I think we can make a better world by sharing thoughts and thinking about how to make a better world together.

People like Elon Musk are good examples for for me. They make awesome innovation disrupt existing regimes.
One day I hope to do such things :)

I honestly thought that these Forums where meant to share knowledge and ideas with each other. Maybe I was mistaken and it's more a way to pick on people or venting your frustrations?
Maybe I'm to ambitious or dreamy for you. It was not my intention to convey that message. Instead I just wanted to share a challenge I was facing.

Would be great to have your thoughts ;)

I would still appreciate any thoughts from people who are interested to think with me. So whoever wants to share his/her thoughts on my initial post, feel welcome to do so.

Thanks.

It should be clear to you by the responses you have received, that there is no interest here in helping you solve your problem...and for good reason.

Imagine if someone had the capability to hear everything another person could hear with their phone.

This fits the technical description of "bug".

You are asking us to give you a way to break the law.

Why not just legally break the law by getting a job with the NSA.

First and foremost your treading on dangerous territory wanting to have OPEN MIC NIGHT in a whole room full of people.

Second have you not been listening to the news about the FBI, CIA, NSA, GM and bunches of others that have run up against JOE PUBLIC about open mic's on cell phones and in cars.

Third how do we know you don't have nefarious reasons to gain such capabilities.

Think about how the question you posted sounds to people that have a reason to be nervous (and those that don't) in this day and age.

I'm not trying to blast you but we DON'T know you so thanks but no thanks!!

If it ever happens that everything and everybody gets connected to everything and everybody else (willing, unwilling or even unaware); the world will become a giant human butchery, full of paranoids, sociopaths, psychos and what not.

I can't help thinking that if everyone has their phone on the table they are likely to spend more time watching the screen for texts & e-mail than attending to the meeting. I would rather have everyone put their phones away at the start of the meeting.

In a room full of people, one mic is as good as two.

If you are looking for ease of connectivity, text, email, skype over IP all are easy to use and are accessable to anyone with a smartphone. The resistance you are getting is because you are insistng that your motives are pure, but that is not reflected by your relatively clear request. You want someone elses phone to transmit to you in real time, like when I elect to say hello. A conference call works.

And this, boys and girls, is why the world doesn't work. We've been bred for suspicion, conflict and hatred of the other. Works well for populating the world. Not so well for continuing society past the clan stage. This is the paranoid geek clan. "You're in the wrong place, my friend. You'd better leave." -Bob Dylan Sorry. Conference call it ain't. Sure gonna sound funny when all those voices don't match phase. Conference calls are for people who aren't in the same audio environment.

A lot of suspicious folk in this thread, perhaps somewhat justified.

I'll bite.

Envision those old senate subcommittee hearings where each speaker there has a microphone in front of them.

Instead of all the electronics and wiring and mic stands for all microphones, each speaker can pull out his/her smartphone (or be issued one upon entry to the meeting) and place it front of them. Certainly a microphone 12" away from the speaker will capture with better fidelity than a single microphone across the room for all.

All these could be paired via bluetooth with a virtual mixing board to provide an effectively n-channel recording of the meeting. Bluetooth pairing ensures opt-in on the part of the participants. Unless "Force Pairing" as seen on "Person Of Interest" is actually a thing.

(You might need some fancy audio filtering as the speaker's voice will also be picked up their neighbor's phones as well)

Implementation is left as an exercise for the reader.

The OP specifically said this was not about clarity, or even recording, it was about connectivity. Phones and the app world provide excellent connectivity. It's about gaining information about who was where and what they said that I think most of us are inferring from the OP's question. And then the real question. Who, and under what circumstances, has access to that data?

I believe we are having a shared observation. Conceptually, a bit flawed, no? Kind of like a shared recording.
