Corona Loss

10/09/2014 11:13 AM

Corona Effect

Corona phenomenon is the ionization of the surrounding air near power conductor. Free electrons are always present in free space because of radioactivity and cosmic rays. As the potential between the conductors is increased, the gradient around the surface of the conductor increase. The free electrons will move with certain velocity depending upon the field strength. These free electrons will collide with molecules of air and in-case they have high velocity they will dislodge the electrons from molecules and which will leads to increase in no. of electrons. This will form a electron avalanche.

I'm not so sure I would call this spam. This may be someone's attempt to share a tid-bit of potentially useful information with the CR4 community. We have had several postings in the past where corona was a key part of the discussion. All the postings that I recall have related to thunderstorm safety but there probably were power line discussions too.

I remember about 30 years ago drilling holes in ping pong balls, filling them with epoxy and later drilling a hole in them. I would then glue the ping pong ball on the top of whip antennas to stop corona. Without modification the antennas would start to "leak" many corona spikes per second starting somewhere around 4000 to 5000 volts per meter. With the ping pong balls the antennas were good to about 10,000 volts per meter. The result, receiver sites that previously were useless when thunderstorms were in the area were now fully operational.

It's copyrighted material used without attribution, Amazing how many people continue to copy the original source without citing it, including the blogger that this was copied from.

If mis-underestimated, couldn't this lead to global thermonuclear war?
