Hi,

How to understand the following labels of diesel generator:

KTA38-G5 KTA50-G3 1250kva 1000kw, which appears to be a 1250 kVA diesel genset.

Go to the website.

1) Output power range: Prime power 800KW--825KW;

Ask the manufacturer's representative.

Read the specifications.

Dear Friend,

The KTA38-G5 KTA50-G3 will be the Manufacturer' Code for identifying the Equipment

For that matter, any Manufacturer will have his own principles to designate for Identity when correspondance starts from the Customer/User.

The 1250 KVA - is the Capacity in KVA 1000 denotes the CAPACITY of the Engine IN KW at a Power Factor of 0.8

I would assume the 1000kW is the electrical power output, so engine rating must be somewhat higher due to alternator efficiency.

Not sure where Lyn gets 825kW max from in #1.

They are CUMMINS engines, 38 denotes displacement and is smaller than KTA50, but engine manufacturer nowadays have upgrade their kW with high BMEP to get a higher ratings. thus as I see it their old KTA 50 G3 use to be 1000kW, but they have up their KTA 38 to do 1000kW and denotes it as G5. Thus you have a situation where some customer still insist using the old or bigger engine, or you might just purchase the new KTA 38 G5. Also CUMMINS do not manufacture KTA's in USA but in China where the emmision is not that stringent.

kVA is the product of current and voltage and tells you the maximum current you can draw. kW is the power you can obtain. (The current may be out of phase with the voltage and provides less power - in kW.)

Depending on the load, there may be a reactive component to the output. As a colleague has said, a load of 1000 kW at 1250 kVA implies a power factor μ of 0.8.

Induction motors are a more or less reactive load, depending on how (mechanically) loaded they are. Heaters generally are just resistive and have a μ of 1.0.

KTA38 etc is manufacturers designation indicating the engine type.1250KVA is the power out put at 0.8Power factor and if you convert it to KW it 1000Kw which is the generator output that can be drawn continuously.engine rating in KW or HP will be higher. In some sets they also indicate continuous and stand by power ratings.

Actually Lyn is right because 1000kw standby (emergency backup) rating maybe 800kw prime power (continuous duty) rating.

It should be specifically mentioned.Otherwise it is continuous.some set manufacturers mention clearly stand by --- kw and continuous ---kw.

Actually, if the OP had bothered to go to the web site, as I did and as I suggested that they do, they could have read the specifications for themselves.

That would have saved everyone a lot of time.

Lyn, while we're talking abou the website, how about http://www.super-generator.com/sdp/1061801/4/pd-5135605/8977397-2012469/diesel_generator_Cummins_engine_generator_KTA38-G5.html? Or http://tinyurl.com/lh56lrp if that's easier!
