Reciprocating Compressor : Gear or Higher Pole Motor

11/10/2014 11:43 PM

Hello,

In a Reciprocating Process Gas Compressor how you decide whether to use Speed Reducing Gear or higher pole motor to limit the speed.

What all factors to be considered?

I'd use the telephone to ask the original equipment manufacturer those sorts of questions. Then, I'm funny that way.

Phone calls should not be included in the cost analyses!

Just saying!

Please give the desired compressor rpm. This is key information that should have been in the original post.

What horsepower and where will this be installed? What power supply is available? I assume that since you have excluded belt reduction that this is fairly sizable, over, say, 100 HP? My experience is that lower speed motor is chosen over gear reduction with larger compressors, assuming the cylinders can be sized for a standard speed.

Higher pole motor directly connected to the compressor with an appropriate shaft coupling. Fewer parts to break, fewer repairs, no gear reducer oil to change or leak, no gears to break or wear, no overheating of the gear box, lower maintenance costs, and many other advantages. In summary, KISS---> Keep It Simple Stupid!

Make it as simple as possible. Initial investment may be higher but operating and repair cost will pay for the difference in $$.

Good Luck, Old Salt
