On Start-up "Battery Not Compatible Or Not Inserted Properly"

11/16/2014 12:50 PM

Greetings,

My daughter who is away at Uni has the above message when she starts up her laptop.

She is using a Sony Vaio (bought from new just over a year old) and running windows 8. I did do some research and it was suggested that, on start-up you type in "msconfig" and enter, then look for a file called ISBMgr and uncheck the box. I passed this on but she cant find them, I also looked for this on my laptop and I couldn't find it either.

Is this a virus? or a simple battery fault.

You are not alone.

VAIO - Battery is not installed properly or not compatible ...

Sony VAIO Battery Problem - SOLUTION !!! - YouTube

I did not review these, that's your job.

Google (is your friend) revealed many more. This must be a real problem.

Good luck.

I had a quick look at the first video, it is well made and appears to be fully accurate and should be followed exactly. It could apply to almost any laptop.

Good advice, thanks for posting.

To the OP:-

I suspect that your daughter may have a cheap after market battery and or mains adapter, both of which could destroy the laptop with possibly a spectacular fire.....its simply not worth risking.

Anyone living in a Westernised country where the mains seldom or never fails, should never use their laptop on mains with the battery inserted, it simply ruins the battery.

The battery can only accept a (very variable!) number of recharges, somewhere probably between 1000 and 1500 as an educated guess.

Leaving the battery in and using mains (as I have said many, many times before on CR4) means every switch on is a recharge......eating away at battery life.....

The correct way to store the battery is to take the mains plug out, use the battery till there is only around 5-10% of charge left.

Shut down the laptop.

Remove the battery.

Protect contacts on the battery with insulation tape to stop a short happening and store it in a safe place.

Use the laptop on mains only.

That way, when you sell the laptop, the battery will still have a possible full life ahead of it.

Batteries are needed only when going "Off-Mains" and should be charged just prior to that.

A better bet for many is a desktop for the same price is often several times faster, has more memory and can be easily repaired. As well as less likely to be stolen as it is large and heavy....

A better bet for home users with unreliable mains is a UPS, laptop without battery or desktop!!

One with a relatively cheap, easily replaced lead acid battery for example, or solar power and an inverter....

Remember, only new genuine OEM batteries and mains adapters are the best for safety reasons.....

G.A for AG! The safety aspect is the most important reason to take this seriously. There have been manufacturer recalls, meaning they will provide a replacement for free. Be sure to contact the manufacturer of the laptop. They would rather pay for a battery, than loss of life, or a dormitory. The battery manufacturer is usually liable.

Thank you Andy and Mike.

Might be worth Sony Vaio users checking out Sony support, there's quite a few models affected.

Andy you brought up some good points that make sense when I think about it, I had always just plugged in the mains charger when the battery is low and sometimes even left it charging over night wont be doing that again.

Mike, hadn't thought to contact Sony but checked out Sony Support and saw this in a red box with exclamation marks

"We have recently identified a serious issue with the battery on a limited number of Vaio model FitF11a models. We advise users to stop using their PC, disconnect them from the mains and get in touch"

Sounds like Sony could be getting worried. I have contacted daughter and told her to take out the battery and only use it on mains, contact Sony and not leave it plugged in at night or when she's not using it. Many thanks.
