NDT Requirements and Hydrotest

11/17/2014 10:33 PM

Is there any clause in ASME Sec VIII that suggests that we can hydrotest, in order to rerate a pressure vessel if there are no NDT records present??

That sounds completely insane.

Your insurance examiner can answer that question if only you would pick up the phone.

Explain the word "rerate" in your context!

What rating what code why ASME?

I would start with a review of ASME Section V.

My apologies to everyone that suffered through my tirade last week about forum replies. I am beginning to get it now. "Just read the appropriate section" was my first thought.

Hi,

the ASME VIII div.1 related to the new design pressure vessel. The expresion you used "rerate" used for the pressure vessel which are in service and had some flaws due to corrosion, erosion, ... others damages.

your issue shall take a controlled documented process and some assessments calculation since you said the vessel want to retaing, so you shall use the API 579 "Fitness for service"as the first step in the Vessel rerating and ofcourse will need some examination reading by UT and internal inspection to indentify any flaws and damage mechanicams that could happend in the vessel.

most of the vessel will have some problems related to the general metal loss, pitting and local metal loss regarding the corrosion or erosion caused by the vessel service and you can use API 579 (part 4, part5, and part6) to assess these flaws and then judge if the vessel is accepted with its original condition or want to rerate and get the rerate conditions.

finaly you should got the remaining life time of the vessel by the rerated condition you got it as mentioned above.

if the vessel remaing life time is not resonable, repairing process shall take place to restore the vessel to its original condition and that done by the API 510 and ASME PCC-2 (post construction code" and ofcourse the vessel will be hydro tested at the final.

must mention that it is not an easy way to rerate any vessel by the method you said, it is very critical issue for the vessel in-service and shall take more intension.

regards ,

Mahmoud
