Need Help Finding EE Majors

11/19/2014 4:56 PM

I am a first year EE student in college and I am looking for a few EE graduates to do quick over the phone or over email interviews. This would be quite short and would include a brief summary of what you've done since graduating and how EE is a part of your life.

Forgive my skepticism.

Isn't there an alumni association at your school?

Trade organizations?

Networks?

IEEE forums?

IEEE - The world's largest professional association for the ...

You sound more like an MBA, marketing type or psych major than an engineering student.

Yes there is and I am a member of IEEE but I was just trying to go across as many resources as I could trying to network. I've been on a few other engineering forums to try and find people for this assignment but none have been working out so well. I would interview my professors from my college but the interviewees can not be associated with the school I go to. I've also asked family and past teachers to no avail.

"I've been on a few other engineering forums to try and find people for this assignment"

We're not supposed to do homework here. It detracts from the learning experience of the student.

That's somewhere in the rules, or FAQ's. Or, so I hear. Never read those things myself.

It detracts from the fun of learning as I go.

If you don't mind a little work try:

SurveyMonkey: Free online survey software & questionnaire ...

I'd normally just tell you to do your own homework.

You're being a bit hard, IMHO. OP doesn't actually want the answer to anything (1. what power is dissipated by a 5Ω resistor with 10A "across" it etc. - we've seen so many) - just wants contacts. By trying several forums (fora?) and other routes he's shown he is doing his own work in this respect.

All good here. Lyn has shown OP a way to go which I find is a good idea.

OP can post the link to his "monkey" here and see what comes out of it!

I came back. OK, I was my usual self. GRrrrrrrrrrr.

But, I did give the lad some leads.

We've seem these surveys here before and they usually don't get much response.

I do think Survey Monkey would be a good source, but engineers are an odd lot, right?

Maybe it's because EE isn't a part of my life. I don't know an ohm from a gigahertz.

There's a new pub down the street from my office. The barkeep said their Guinness has N2 injection.

Jeez, Lyn, an ohm is a gighertz.

Re : Ohm vs gigahertz

Ohms is bigger than Hertz. You can tell because an Ohm all by itself is big enough to talk about, but you got to get gigas of them Hertzes before anyone is interested.

I have a question, what is the purpose of the survey anyway? A college Electrical Engineering project?

It just doesn't make sense to me. We just studied Electrical theory and practical application ourselves, not others who have studied it.

Can you explain please (you may get some positive responses if you explain the point and goals of the survey).

Okay guys I made a monkey account and designed a small survey that includes what that interview requires and is pretty straight forward and might take 5-10 minutes.

This is the link https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LJ5TQWB

At my college Cal Poly San Louis Obispo the way the EE program works is there is a lab class and a complimentary lecture class and the lecture is more about being an effective engineer and putting yourself out in the world not just be stuck in the lab so we do a lot of readings on networking as engineers and signing up for clubs and organizations like IEE. The purpose of this "interview" assignment is just do get some networking experience and see what sorts of experiences can come from an EE degree.

Good on you.

There has to be many sparky forums out there.

The monkey link is a good start. Now, go find people to take the survey.

The other thing to look for is an incentive for individuals to respond to such a survey and the statistical significance of it.

This a good practical assignment for someone starting out in college especially for engineering in my opinion. We had an Intro to Engineering class where this would be an appropriate experience.

But here is all you have to do. Call several Electrical Component manufacturers or suppliers and when the receptionist says "how may I direct your call" you respond by saying "I would like to speak with someone in Engineering please". I think most people will be willing to give you 1 or 2 minutes of their time to talk about their education, career path and expectations then and now.

You should have one of their products in mind to talk about and ask the engineer if he had a part in designing the product and how he feels about supporting the product and if he is doing what he/she thought they would be doing when they started college and off you go .... be honest with them, I think most will be helpful but some may be having a bad day, don't take it personal and call the next one on your list.

Furthermore, call your dream job company that you have done research on and talk to some engineers there, then keep in touch about your education progress etc. over the years and perhaps one day you can interview there. Good Luck.
