Clarence N Hickman (1889-1981)

07/06/2007 5:27 AM

A great all round American Scientist and Inventor.

Designed a multitude of things...

The Bazooka! Spinning rocket launchers, High speed cameras, a device for measuring pressures in explosions. Mechanical piano movements.

He was very much a self taught country boy and apparently surveyed and drained a load of farm land as a youngster with only very basic tools. he was also a magician and entertainer...

The book

Clarence N Hickman the Father of Scientific Archery

Is a great read, he was the first person to film the archers paradox (this is how the arrow flexes around the bow rather than shooting off sideways as might be expected) .

He would even perform the 'William Tell Shot' on stage, shooting an apple which was on someones head, with a bow ! (not a crossbow! There was a safety shield disguised under a drap, for any safety officers out there!)

This should also go into the 'favourite books thread!'

He doesn't sem to have a concise reference in Wiki as he was so diverse.

He could fill a whole 'weaponology' section on his own...go get him Moose!

He seems to be one of the rather overlooked 'good guys', I take my hat off to him.

He sounds a wee bit dangerous to my liking.

Hi Del - I just finished a long comment on proposed legislation and needed a opportunity to let off something.

Quite a list of achievements - would you say they had more time or opportunity or both?

The piano movement - Moving from A to B by explosives? or moving parts?
