My Pendrive Installation is Not Successfull

12/05/2014 10:40 AM

My pendrive is not detecting in Windows 7 now. Previously it was working good in the same. But now it is working in my other computer very well and that computer have windows 8.1 operating system. So I have opened device manager in windows 7, and clicked on view option then clicked on shown hidden devices. Then right clicked disk drives and scanned for hardware changes. At the extended view of disk drives I couldn't find my pendrive.

This much information I can provide can somebody help me to this problem.

I use Macs, not Windows, so what I say here may or may not be relevant, but since no one else has responded yet, I'll try...

1. Newer operating systems commonly use a different file structure that stores more information about each file, than the older file system did (allowing longer file names, for instance). The newer operating system (8.1 in your case), can probably read the files on drives formatted for the older system, but not vice-versa. If the pendrive was formatted on the newer machine, it quite likely can't be seen by the older one.

To test this, get a different pendrive that does work in the older machine. insert it into the new machine and drag a simple file, such as a text or small PDF document, from the new machine to the icon for the pendrive. Eject the pendrive and put it back in the older machine. You should be able to see the file, and, assuming both machines have the same software, you should be able to open the file on either machine.

Next, reformat the pendrive using the newer machine, and put the same file on it. If my conjecture is correct, you won't be able to see the reformatted drive in the older machine.

2. Since the pendrive is connected via the USB port, it may not be listed as a disk drive. Look in the USB section of the hardware list.

I suspect this is NOT a winblows issue (for a change). Have seen hardware issues on some cheap, full of design shortcuts usb drives, working on one motherboard and not reliably (up to not recognized at all) on another, and traced ALL cases down to a couple of tenths of a volt lower USB voltage in the problematic connection. You can check if this is your case using an EXTERNALLY powered USB hub If usb drive works through the hub you nailed it. S.M.

If your pen drive is USB 3.0 it won't work on any USB 2.0 socket.

True, but he said that it used to work in the W7 machine, and now it doesn't, so that can't be the problem.

I just noticed that the original title refers to Pendrive Installation. This is probably a matter of translation into English, but a Pendrive does not normally require any installation; you just insert the drive into the USB port, wait a few seconds, and it should show up. As I recall, on a PC you may get a message something like "New hardware detected".

Yes I did notice that but I also noticed that the command of English was such that I took some license and guessed at the possible problem. It may also be that he has formatted the drive, either deliberately or co-incidentaly by using it in W8, to USB 3.0.

JIMRAT,

Thumb drives that are USB 3.0 compatible, are backwards compatible with all types of USB ports, all the way back to 1.0. And a flash drive can not be "formatted" to USB 3.0, that is not a format type, it's an interface type, and as such, there is nothing the user can do to change that. The format types (or "file system") for removable storage on a Windows system are probably limited to FAT and FAT32, to insure compatibility with older versions of Windows.

O.K. So it is only 2.0 that cannot be read on 3.0?

USB hardware is set to always be backwards compatible with earlier standards, it should always be able to connect and be used, but it will be limited by the slowest piece in the connection; if you have a thumb drive that is USB 2.0, plugging it into a 3.0 port is not going to give you USB 3.0 transfer speeds. Now, depending on how the drive gets formatted, it may not be readable on other systems; you won't read files on a drive formatted on a Mac, when you plug it into your Windows PC, and vice versa.

My apologies to the OP for getting a bit off-topic. Not sure what's causing his no-read issue, but I have seen the issue mentioned earlier of drive mapping causing headaches.

Correct, except for that 'vice versa'. Macs have always been able to read and record to PC-Formatted floppies and USB drives. I commonly transfer files between my Mac and PCs using a USB drive, especially when they are too large to email easily. Macs just don't store quite as much data on a PC formatted drive as they can on a drive formatted specifically for Macs.

Of course a Mac can't boot from a PC-formatted USB drive (even if the drive contained an appropriate Mac operating system), while it can from a Mac-formatted USB drive that has an appropriate operating system installed. I do this regularly on other people's Macs to determine whether they have a problem in their operating system.

I don't find your post at all 'off topic'. Mine could be, since there is no indication that the OP ever had contact with a Mac.

You may have a "drive letter" problem. Are you using a computer that normally is connected to networked drives? If you are and the problem occurs when you are Not connected. The USB drive may show up under a drive letter that is already in use.

Right Click "my computer" and click manage. then storage then disk management..

Look for a drive that is the correct size as your USB drive. you can right click on the USB drive and change drive letter.

Hope this helps.

I have faced a strange USB connectivity problem in my previous laptop's USB ports. Mouse installation failed several times whenever I tried to insert it in USB ports. However, installation was successful whenever I tried to retract it little bit to a particular place in that port itself (Like a trial and error method). So, just check functioning of your USB ports and make sure that USB ports are working properly.
