Hi, rambo,

I do installation support for Autodesk.

They no longer support 2004. If you don't have the original package, or the receipt, you probably won't be able to get a serial number. You can run it as a 30 day trial evaluation version by entering all zeroes for the serial number.

You might consider getting a later release in the student version. It costs about $300, and is available online at several places. Some of the more popular places I come across are journeyed.com, studica.com, and academicspuerstore.com. One caveat: 2007 and 2008 come on DVD's, so you need a DVD drive to read the disk.

2008 is Vista compatible. 2007 requires a patch available as Service Pack 2, downloadable at the Autodesk.com support page. The first time you use the program under Vista, you have to use a workaround. Right click on the icon, and choose Run as Administrator.

Some places may still have 2006 available, and I believe it comes on CD's.

sorry, Doug, but from my experiences as a "principle", Autocad is one of the best design tools but its one very bad feature is that it is NOT cross platform. It is a shame, too, as many of us are finding that we would rather stay with the *nix's rather than with Microsoft. It would be far better if Autodesk would port to our platforms, too.

I have an old computer with windows 3.1 on it and I can find a lot of numbers for games and c d's that are hidden when used in a windows 95 and up system.

Rambo, there is an alternative to Autocad, it is opensource and you need Linux for it. Its file format is compatible with Autodcad, the dxf fromat, when can be read by Autocad's dwg formate. If you are interested, you can find livecd's here, http://www.on-disk.com/, and here, http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php, that can be installed in duel boot with Windows. I prefer to run my Linux on its own platform, however. Windows is simply too vunerable to attack for my liking and way, way too expensive to own, operate and maintain.

chtank:

Tell us more. Have you used it? How does it compare to Autocad??

When the files are imported into Autocad, does everything come out OK?

I use QCAD, which is available in open source on Linux. It is not quite as sophisticated as Autocad, but since it is open source, it is continually being upgraded and, likewise, as more users demand it, will be upgraded even further and faster. However, there are other cad programs being developed, some are open source and some are proprietary but less pricey. One can find a complete list for both Windows and for Linux by typing "cad" or "acad" of "cadd" or "autocad" in google. There are also tutorials and wiki's listed this way

If you sign up for a 'hands on test drive' of solidworks at your local solidworks reseller, they will give you a handy, node locked 90 day renewable solidworks 'personal edition'.

http://www.solidworks.com/pages/news/3DSkills.html

All drawings are watermarked and files can only be opened by that particular install. Same will include the 'DWG editor' which is an OK clone of ACAD. Not the same, not as stable, but practically equivalent to myself who has cut a few, but not all teeth on autocad.

I don't think that the DWG editor is node-locked or times out like solidworks personal edition, which most handilly aids in self-training as I grind thru borrowed solidworks training manuals which are ominously labeled "not to be used for self-paced training" in the introduction. If at that point you still care not to join the third dimension, you might look up 'solid edge 2-d' it's billed as a parametric 2-d CAD put out by one of the 3D cad manufacturers. I never played with it because I use 2k instead of the required XP.

If you're son would rather learn 3D MCAD go to www.alibre.com and download the Xpress version - completely free - a lot easier to use that Auto Cad and it'll teach him a skill that will be useful in the future.

Montirocks

I will try this out. I have a copy of autodesk now and have been looking for another compatible system to put onto a Sony Vaio for use in the field. Thanks for the link

If it is a legitimate copy, ie, you purchased it through an Autodesk reseller then your best bet is to email them with the product serial number. they should then be able to email you back with an activation key.

Good Luck.
