Does Anyone Know What a Cold Press Is?

12/10/2014 3:53 PM

A friend of mine had the contacts fall off the terminals on the heated rear windscreen.

She showed me the connecting wires: they were simply thick sections of stranded wire (about AWG16 I'd guess) approx. 3 inches long, with a spade crimped to one end and the other end soldered to a contact about 1 cm², and, silver on the side which was supposed to be connected to the windscreen.

The garage she originally took it to, said that if she knew someone with a cold press they could re-attach them. None of the places she tried had any ideas, so, in the end she just had the whole windscreen replaced.

I've Googled cold press with no luck. I did find a few people who had re-connected the contacts with PCB repair fluid/pen or other conductive glue and then formed a strong mechanical joint over the whole area.

Of course there may be a completely different name for this thing in the US, but, again I had no luck searching.

Forget "cold press".

Frost Fighter Defroster Repair and Replacement Kits

Look at defogger repair kits.

They use chemical reactions of conductive adhesives to make a "cold' repair.

Lyn,

Jeez, slow down, give someone else a shot at grabbing the brass ring.

Just Kidding.

PERFECT answer!!!

I have also used conductive epoxy in these cases when I cannot find the product you showed.

Use a bit of masking tape to keep the wires in place while the adhesive cures. You may also want to mask around the attachment area to keep the area a bit cleaner while you apply the tabs to the window.

I took the day off. I have a cold and my office-mates made me leave early yesterday.

My new phart smone was delivered this morning and got it going so now I'm just hangin'.

Besides, I worked with conductive adhesives in the 70's. Mostly silver filled.

That was during the time when the Hunt brothers tried to buy up all the silver in the world.

So you have a pressing cold, I see. Lyn, I hope you feel better. Since I joined this forum I have seen your posts in so many of these topics and you'd knowledge is wide and varied. And correct on pretty much every topic you reply to. I appreciate and value your input mostly because it is based in reality and is what I would call good common sense.

Thanks, on both counts. I'm on here a lot. Too much, some say.

I, like you, learned by doing. And listening! And by accumulating almost 50 years worth of mistakes experience in different fields.

I am a legend in my own mind.

It's all old news by then.

It takes that long for the Internet to get there, are you still on dial-up at 3200 baud?

I knew Australia was far away but that's crazy. Maybe if you were able to get the water to reverse it rotation while draining, the internet will speed up, just a theory? Something about the magnetic flux in your hemisphere?

Thanks Lyn, now I know what to look for plenty of sources in the UK too.

Cold press in the semiconductor industry is the joining of parts by pressing a hard metal component into a softer one. In our products, the old way of doing a final seal under vacuum was to push a nickel alloy steel part into a bed of indium/tin or indium/bismuth alloy which cold flowed into grooves in the steel to create the seal.

Maybe this relates in some way to how they make the screen contacts?

Thanks Nigh, This looks like the sort of thing that "they" were referring to, but, I can't imagine that it would be appropriate for the task in hand.

I would not use a cold press to try to re-attach a broken window defroster tab. I'm picturing the rear window in a billion pieces on your rear seat and trunk! it may work in the initial manufacturing of the window however I would never put that kind of stress on automotive glass.

Good Luck

A cold press is the opposite of a hot press.

Why not just use the crimping pliers/wire strippers to remount some new terminals?
