justify in what way, faster/slower?

any positive justification removes from other properties.

You should ask the manufacturer for the operator's manual and for their advice on use limits, if any.

This, of course, should already be at hand in the office of the maintenance supervisor.

That last sentence is wasted on you, I know.

In plain English, you should already know this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why ask strangers to do your job for you??

If the manufacturer of excavator recommends a limit, you are done. If you recommended it but cannot justify why you recommend it then you are done in an unhappy way. If somebody else recommended it, ask them not us.

As for my opinion, I prefer left hand justification for English text.

Moving parts wear. The more they move the more they wear. By your post you don't want them to wear out. So with draw your equipment shut your doors and go home. Problem solved!

As a contractor renting your equipment if you placed restrictions on it's use. I would go else where to rent. As I also have a contract to complete a job. Time is money and your putting restriction on your equipment use will cost me.

So it seems in the idea to cut cost of repairs. You want to place restriction. Might as well close up and go home.

Most companies that lease equipment figure into the lease price the cost of maintaining the equipment.

Bill them a "service charge" for excess KM. If they don't like it they will go elsewhere. How does your competition do it?

Rent by distance rather than time.

Sooo nothing in the contract preventing the customer from, say getting a couple of crawlers and having a drag race or driving cross country to the local liquor store for beers?

Ask crawler manufacturer for their opinion on the limits and pass that through to the customer and add it into future contracts.

Don't expect the customer to automatically listen to you however if your current contract is too broad, the customer is more interested in saving themselves money not you.

It should have a set of wheels to travel on roads, in addition to its track for fieldwork.

First question is what parts break down ?

Why does the user run 2 km a day ? In general a crawler works on a spot for a longer period of time and then it is moved between working places when for instance its arm is not any more able to do the job. 2 km a day is on my modest opinion (I only was involved in repair of crawlers) a lot it has to be understood why it is necessary to do it.

By the way the other remarks are OK.

I agree , what parts and cost are incurred ?

What does the equipment manufacture recommend and how old is this equipment ?

Start with a 80 % factor and shorten distance till you are back to making a profit or repair cost is manageable.

Assuming ( making an ass of you and me) that you rent these machines under contract to a company and that you have a fixed contract there is little you can do till the contract is completed. I am not a lawyer but one might help. You can talk to the hirers and explain the necessity to limit daily crawling to prevent down time. Next time make sure your contract covers this and other major pitfalls of a hire contract. Did a lawyer draw up this contract? If this is not the scenario and it is a daily hire then simply add this to the daily hire agreement. A crawler of any description has a finite life. This is usually based on its useful life span. For example, a 10000 dollar machine has a life span of 5 years at so much work a day, Double this work it will last only 2.5 years with a residue of 5000 dollars in the red) It is not a totally linear relationship but close enough. Can you replace a machine on down time or will you forfeit your contract or will the hirer suffer the cost of non production during this down time. It might be cheaper to supply transportation to move the crawler to the job site rather than walk it. I hope this gives you some ideas.

Any marching is going to take time and cause wear. The question is 'Why are they marching?' Is it to get closer to the lunch wagon or is that where the excavation is? You can't dig a hole over there if the machine is here. So, the economics comes in by analyzing, 'Does the cost of loading and transporting the machine offset the cost of wear on the machine.' (I'm a refrigeration guy, not an excavation guy. Am I missing something?) -- JHF

Maybe you should offer a dump truck in the rental so the crawler wound not have to carry the dirt to the dump site.

Re: Technical Justification of Crawling Excavators Marching Limit Per Day

I'm just not buying the whole marching excuse myself.

Reason being that the vast majority of track and related undercarriage drive components used on excavator tracks be them metal or rubber are also used on crawlers, dozers tracked skid steers and so forth that do nothing but drive and turn all day, and while most often heavily loaded, to do their jobs.

What I am suspecting is that someone has a number of now well worn machines that are easy money makers, being they have more than likely paid themselves off a few times over, that now require a moderate investment for proper higher dollar components of which the owner is too cheap to be willing to do so and thus is looking for justification to blame the customer for the wear and tear.

Always the skeptic.

Probably right, too.

I can't imagine why they'd build them with weak undercarriages either.

Not so skeptical just over experienced in working around cheap business owners/managers that cut their own hand off that they used to feed themselves to save/make a buck in the short term.

One of my first rules of successful business practices is never place restrictions on what your customers can do with your product when selling it to them. Someone else will always be too happy to take your business away at your expense.

TCM, I believe that we're getting closer to what really happened, basically OP was the low bidder by a wide margin, and his customer was more than willing to take advantage of OP's poor pricing model.
