Natural Gas Loss from a Purge

12/16/2014 8:20 PM

I know the size of the opening (4" diameter) and the pressure (5 psi) of a purged pipeline. Is there a way to figure out the flowrate (e.g., cubic feet/min) of the gas lost (this is not a full purge of a pipe, only a controlled release)?

Yep but anonymous posters are not real forum members with real problems so I can not give one any workable info.

Get used to it.

You did not mention how long the 4" opening is open....Flow rate is one thing, flow total is something entirely different.

Also, the answer(s) depend on what all is downstream of this opening, from nothing all the way to a 4" pipeline to your shop?

Welcome to CR4. by the way. You managed to learn the First Rule of CR4: We don't talk about Fight Clu- Oops, wrong list.

The First Rule is: anyone posting as an anon with a question that looks like a homework assignment ("Given an opening of X and a PSI of Y, what is the flow rate through the opening?") will be assumed to be a student trying to get the forum to do their homework for them, and treated appropriately.

We're a pretty friendly and helpful bunch (as long as the coffee keeps flowing), so feel free to pull up a virtual chair and chat away. For some reason, those people who just want to start arguments and generally act like poopie-heads (this is a public forum, so we do our best to avoid 'crude language') don't stick around too long.
