I'm going to take a stab in the dark and guess that it's a cloud?

Evidence of a black hole.

With stars orbiting around it and one going nova?.

Gas clouds or proto-star that has broken up.

Time will likely tell.

They say that the mystery object "made a tight orbit around the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy 13 years ago." However that doesn't sound very plausible, since we are between 25 and 30 thousand light years from there we could hardly be aware of its existence yet.

Just being a bit pedantic I suppose, but in looking to confirm my thoughts I found this quite interesting site:-

http://www.rhysy.net/galaxy-sizes.html

It compares the sizes of various galaxies at the same scale on a poster thingy.
