Dear , happy 2015

It possible to have a microwave motor runs only on one side?

Lyn

I need the motor has only one direction of rotation. I plan to use this engine in a base for Tig welding, so the engine should run always and only to one side. Do you have an idea for this?

My old washing machine timer, which also uses a synchronous motor, had a small plastic one-way clutch which forced it to run the right direction.

All of the microwave table assemblies I've taken apart (2) had a wobble gear that determined which direction the table turned. The motor itself always turned the same direction. If one fixed the wobble gear in one position the table should turn in only one direction.

All the microwaves I have ever had, 10 or so, reversed direction after opening the door and closing it again when running....but I am NOT saying that ALL microwaves do this.....

It must be pretty easy to defeat that so that it only turns in one direction.....

Type "microwave motor" into a search engine.

Redfred,

can you give me more details so that I can do to change this gear?

You have to examine the mechanics of the drive mechanism to see what and if this can be done mechanically. Just spinning the motor shaft by hand with the mechanism visible to you is what I would do next.

Fred,

That's not very nice.

Just send him the detailed instructions, with detailed drawings.

We can't be mean or the OP may not come back.

Only if MADE to run one-way. The difference is the absence of a ratcheting mechanism that allows the first kick only in the "correct" direction, since this kind of motors would happily run in both. But that is not the only reason this motor is totally unsuitable for your rotating welding table app. No speed control and not enough power to move any serious weight make it bad choice. A small DC motor with worm gearing and variable supply would be better and still low cost. S.M.

Welding table???

That's more confusing than the op.

No clue why they'd want to use a microwave motor.

I'd just buy a TIG welder motor.

Couldn't apply any other... deciphering of "base for Tig welding" in post 2 that made sense. S.M.

OK.

Makes as much as the rest.

Which is none.

Maybe pipe welding?

I have seen three jaw and four jaw chucks used to mount a part and then driven by a small dc gear drive motor to get constant / steady speed for welding. Some were home made, some store bought. Store bought were expensive, home made usually fairly cheep but fraught with issues. Some were also using speed controller's to change rotational speed, but all had a purpose in the end.

You appear to mix up the English word "side" with the English word "direction". Is that true......?

Motors (in English) can turn in one of two "directions".

This may even be qualified by looking at the end of one of the motor "shafts" and talk about "clockwise" and "anti clockwise". Use your dictionary for better definitions.

I hope this helps you further.

Hi proeletrica,

use a windshield wiper motor + gearbox.

you will need a 12 volt power source.

direct current is not so nice (reliability, switching), still torque is better and motor will not turn backwards.

you will not get a microwave motor fitting your application.

Hi Snel

I mounted the revolving base with windshield wiper motor without gearbox, used a PWM electronic speed control system. The problem in this system is that to achieve optimal welding speed to the voltage on the motor is around 2 volts, so that the motor is torque-free. I'll have to redesign a new system using a speed reducer or other system that can to brake the motor.

Possibly gearing using a non conductive rubber "vee" or "toothed" belt maybe?

So that the welding current will not take the wrong path....

Hi proeletrica,

you mean without an additional gearbox?

Windshield wiper motors have integral gearboxes:

http://veiculos.mercadolivre.com.br/acessorios/motor-limpador-parabrisa-bosch-chp

Driving the motor with such low voltages will mean a low torque even with a PWM.

Are you trying to accomplish this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNA66o9955k

Be careful, you need a ground connected to your turntable surface. If you don't, you will probably destroy your motor when the welding arc travels through your motor, gearbox, electrical wiring, fuse-box, ETC.
