A RJ48S telephone cable (USOC) is my guess.

Were the wires connecter to pins 1, 2, 7, & 8?

How was the other end wired?

Were the pairs reversed?

If so,you may have a cross-over cable for connecting two NIC MDI Ports.

See link:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable

If wired the same on both ends, you have a straight through cable..

1&3 are a pair ; 2&6 are the other pair. if the colors are the same on each pin at each end then this is a patch or standard interconnect cable. IF 1&3 are reversed, and 2&6 are also reversed, then this is a NULL cable for direct communication between hosts. ( similar to a null modem cable )

1&3 are a pair ; 2&6 are the other pair

1&2 are a pair ; 3&6 are the other pair.

See Solar Eagles link.

Just to confuse things a bit more: telecoms. cable which use the same cables use pins 1&2 as one pair, and, 4&5 for the other.

For 100 base T installations when you wanted more capacity, but, couldn't run any more cables, you could get adapters which you fitted at each end of the Cat5 cable

....1a----1----1a
....2a----2----2a
....3a----3----3a
....6a----6----6a
....1b----4----1b
....2b----5----2b
....3b----7----3b
....6B----8----6b

Well, partner, in its current state, that cable is not good for much, except discussion.

IHNI what that is, looks like telephone patch cable.

the cable that you have is used for telephones but the connector is an RJ45. 2 possible connections. the old ethernet connection which 1,2,3 and 6 (usually blue - blue/white. orange - orange/white) with a limited length of 300 millimeters, or an ADSL connector comms cable with 1,2,3 and 6 (white - blue/white. orange - orange/white) with a 1.2 meter cable. With the ADSL cable you can go up to 5 meters as the signal degradation is not as critical as it is for the ethernet application.
