Asus Laptop RAM

01/15/2015 1:19 AM

I recently got an Asus laptop but it wouldn't start up. We found the card with one RAM slot which was empty. When we put a RAM in the unit started up. I asked the seller about this missing RAM but they said there is RAM on the card with the empty

slot. Is this common? Are the chips on this card RAM?

It looks like it is. Try googling the part number, that should give you all the specs for that card

The only number that came up with anything recognizeable was the 60NB0270 #. That was the motherboard part number. The numbers on the individual chips didn't take me anywhere.

you can't by the numbers on the chips. you may have to remove the card and look on the back side, the part number are usually on a whit vinyl strip.

Whats the model number of your Asus laptop? And can you take a better close up picture of the card without the glare?

The pc is out in the field and I won't see it for some time. We swiped some RAM from some poor fool (me) that used to have 8 GB Ram on their machine. I zoomed in on the pics I have and it definitely looks like the back side of the main motherboard. THat was why I thought the ICs in the photo were just interface chips or something. I didn't think RAM was permanatly soldered on the board.

Product Line:K450Memory:4 GB
Model:K450CA-BH21THard Drive Capacity:500 GB
MPN:90NB0279-M03670Operating System Edition:64 bit
Operating System:Windows 8Processor Configuration:Dual Core

Frequently at least 2 Gig of RAM is included on the motherboard.

Use the free tool at crucial.com, it will tell you what the unit requires as well as any upgrades available & what's nice about them is they don't have any problem with "other" brands that are their competition what works they let you know with new and USED pricing!

Yes the chips on this card are RAM and if missing any RAM in the laptop it will not work.

RAM is usually not on the main board but added via slots.

So if there was not RAM in the laptop it would have to be sold as missing RAM please add at your own costs.

Make sure the RAM is in the proper slot.

As received, the ram could have been put in wrong slot.

Check your manual.

Some will not run if only one ram chip is installed, and some will, but only if the RAM is

in the proper slot.

by the looks of things you were ripped off. Laptops are always sold with at least 2Gb ram already installed. The chips in the photo are ROM chips attached to the mother board ans are internal operating chips(Random Operational Memory). RAM is what you need to get the system started (random Access Memory). check on your invoice weather it says RAM not included. if not then speak to your supplier and get your 8Gb back

ROM is "Read Only Memory"

Yeah, that is what I had thought. The chips were ROM. We also found loose/unconnected cables inside. Looked like the PC was put together at the end of the shift and QA was already gone.

Re: Asus Laptop RAM

Some good points already made.

Furthermore, some PCs/Laptops require equal amounts of RAM in both positions, some need it just for performance reasons, but will run OK with one card. Most will I find.

The built in RAM Test on most PC/Laptops, even if enabled, will usually find only really crass memory errors....you need proper memory test software....

Its possible that the original single RAM card is simply defective....which is why it did not run with just one.

Thats my thoughts by the way....

The memory test I always use can be downloaded for free for Windows, Mac and Linux in bootable CD and USB versions. It needs little knowledge to use and will mark errors in red.

Just let it run and run, overnight is good!! See here:-

memtest86 download

Keep a copy always handy, at home or at work!! The USB stick version may be the best way to go....you decide.

Remember that the PC/Laptop BIOS must allow CD/USB booting AND it must be set to boot from either of those BEFORE the Hard Disk is accessed!!! I leave mine like that all the time, as its only a problem if you leave a "bootable" CD/DVD/USB Stick plugged in ALL the time. I simply open the Drive door at boot time....I rarely use sticks.

You should get that laptop back and test if fully and get any guarantee parts replaced.....

If you like MEMTest86, get your company to pay for the Pro version.....

Best of luck.

Re: Asus Laptop RAM

If it started when you added ram as you stated, the existing ram was not enough to support the operating system, or it was configured wrong (block in wrong slot), or possibly bad ram in the area where the boot routines are loaded by rom and when you added memory, the boot routine was loaded to a different area and the bad memory still exists to trouble you later. You need facts about the rom and memory, and a memory test routine that can run without the operating system resident.

Most have already answered your question.

I just want to add something because I just recently purchased an Asus Laptop, that is quadcore i5, It has an AMU/HD Video Card. Yours probably does too. That means that the video card does not carry it's own RAM, like most video cards do, Video Ram is shared ram from your operating system RAM. My laptop is expandable to 12gigs of RAM, which I will probably do because it is my understanding that this sharing RAM makes the graphics a little laggy.
