Glass, Not Coating, is Flaking Off My Eyeglasses. Why?

01/16/2015 4:21 PM

Flakes of what looks like glass are coming off both lenses of a two year old pair of ordinary reading glasses. I'm pretty sure the lenses are glass rather than plastic but can't be sure. I don't think they ever had any kind of coating. I took the glasses to an optician in Costa Rica where I live and he said the problem is "hongos" which translates as fungus or mold. Could this be possible? There is no discoloration, just a roughness that can be scratched off and looks like glass.

Can the flakes be burned with an ordinary cigarette lighter ?

Fungal/bacterial stuff will gow anywhere. Never heard of fungus on glasses, but I've never lived in Costa Rica. You need to do a sort of 'animal/mineral/vegetable' test on the flaking stuff.

Any chance of a photo ?

Sounds like a "non-scratch" coating that was improperly applied, to me.

It sounds like the scratch resistant coating on polycarbonate lenses....You can clean it off with any number of solutions....

In the last two or three years I have been having a lot of trouble with coatings coming off. In the many years before that I had no trouble at all. Labs are either using lower cost (and quality) coatings to save money or they are using coatings that they know will fail to prevent people from going too long without replacing their lenses.

I agree that it is the anti-scratch coating flaking off. Every pair of glasses I have had in the last 2 decades have done this. The higher quality coatings are better but still flake off. As for the FUNGUS / MOLD explanation??? I don't know of anyone that has had this issue.

After GOOGLING lens fungus, this is what I found. If this is what is on your eyeglasses...... CLEAN THEM!!!!! Yuck!!

Here is a good site just for you!
