VAWT - Project Code Name: BIG JIBBY

07/09/2007 4:07 PM

Hello CR4...what an amazing bunch of people out there! I originally posted here to get some help with a project that I have been working on for two years. I got some great advice from the members so I wanted to post this...to see what might happen...

I have now designed and manufactured a Vertical Access Wind Turbine. I must also say that I had some help from my best friends...without the project would be a pile of scrap headed for meltdown.

I now have a working prototype and am getting ready for the next stage of the project, the generator and gearbox systems. I plan to manufacture as much of the parts for the whole turbine and generator system in-house at our own fabrication shop. The design is still being thought out to make the most efficient PMM possible that will work with the varying wind speeds.

This project is not trying to break the laws of thermal dynamics or be over unity...it is designed to take power from the wind and convert it to energy, electric and mechanical. The wind blades and tower design are scaleable in height. I'm new to this whole making power from the wind "thing" but it sure has been fun building this latest prototype.

My vision and dream of this project is massive...I am seeking for investment such as start-up capitol to build a 40-50 foot model and to finish the generator design. Anyone out there want to help me make some electricity and get some awesome wind wings to the world market? I have a long way to go until this project is in full gear so I tell myself, Don't Panic!

I am really, just a guy. That's it...I joke around...I work with graphics and tools and sometimes try to think of things that can help the worlds energy system be cleaner like these wind wings that I have designed. I live in Canada and am working towards my dream of helping the alternative energy market with the development of this project.

I will stop here for now...more if anyone is truly interested...I'm here, deep in the depths of the stumplab most days...trying to stay focused on the big picture while I live in the little picture.

Have a nice day,

I have not installed a tach yet. I am thinking about buying one this month. Rough guess at rpm was about 150-250 RPM in 25KM/HR winds...but this is a very rough guess based on counting the number of times it was spinning in the video in one second. The camera may not have been able to keep up with the rpm and frame rate...but common sence from looking at it I would say 200RPM looks about right.

I need to finish building my generator and am currently in the design stage of this component. I have a few ideas as to the type of generator to make/use.

Some years ago,I took a seminar at MIT. The seminar was designed to teach technical professionals the fundamental skills needed to startup and run a development project including market assessment, marketing and capital accrual. It was for the technical/entrepreneurial type person who generally hasn't a clue about business and was quite good.

It was sponsored by a company called Morgan Group, LLC out of Boston, MA. Don't know if they still offer seminars but it's worth looking into. www.morganllc.com

@marenq - Thanks...this is great... I am looking at their website now. Not sure that this will be a right fit for me being up north in maple land and all but it sounds like a great place to learn!

You might take a look at vertical axis wind turbines designed and manufactured by Global Wind Technology in Torrance, CA (www.globalwindtech.com). In my view, the major advantages of VAWT are their efficiency, reliability and low profile.

"I have now designed and manufactured a Vertical Access Wind Turbine."

It appears you are not the first to do so.

Nor the second either.

Condolences!

yup...Im not the first and I doubt i'll be the last...I know there are several other designs out there and I'm not claiming to be the first to design one. I'm just trying to get my version out there.

I wish I could show you some pictures today but as mentioned on a different thread I'm stuck in the Patent Trap. I think I am going to skip the patent and launch witn open source design. As I have found out today from the links in the threads there are several VAWT about to hit the market.

A freind once said that he found it amazing that these types of ideas seem to stream through society and all find there way to the surface at the same time.

Any development in wind energy is great because there is so much power out there and all we need to do is throw some spinning whirly gigs up in the air! I think its awesome that there are so many new designs of energy devices in all feilds of alternitive energy...we might just be able to go green afterall.

i just hope to be able to get build a wind energy company and get this big jibby making power for the people.

"A freind once said that he found it amazing that these types of ideas seem to stream through society and all find there way to the surface at the same time."

Not so much coincidences as a matter of need, knowledge, technology and similar factors coming together in a variety of places simultaneously.

I'm sure all of CR4 wishes you well in your enterprise.
