Oil on AC Piping

02/05/2015 5:49 AM

I have a split dual mode air conditioner i.e heating plus cooling . the rating of a.c is 1.5Ton , 230VAC. i recently operated it in heating modes for a month without any problem . then all the sudden it stoped working in heat mode . i checked the outdoor unit and was surprised to see the one of the gas pipe from outdoor to indoor unit was covered completely in oil and grease . there are large deposit signs of oil on the soil just beneath the pipe .and even now oil is driping from it .Please guide me what is the problem.

The problem seems to be either the absence of, or a reluctance to read, the troubleshooting section of the User Manual. Either that or a reluctance to pick up the phone and talk to the equipment manufacturer directly. CR4 is seeing an awful lot of that recently.

The newer AC units include an oil lubricant with the refrigerant. You've got a leak. The oil has leaked out and likely the refrigerant as well. Call a repairman.

As I understand it, the older ones, mostly the CFC's, were viscous enough that they didn't need oil. The HCFC's and newer refrigerants need oil added.

Call an HVAC technician and be prepared to open your wallet, turn it upside down and let the entire contents fall into the technicians hands.

You have a major leak and your compressor may have toasted itself.

  1. How old is the unit?
  2. What type of refrigerant (R-12, R-22, R-410a)?
  3. What type of access do you have for the tech to service the unit.
  4. From your description it appears you have what is called a "Heat Pump" which means the compressor is used for heating and cooling ($$$$$$$)

Depending on the refrigerant (R-12, R-22, R-410a) be prepared for about a $1200.00 - $1600.00 repair if you need a new compressor.

That's a great deal. Buy a new one if it is that cheap!

Other have pointed to the oil coming from the refrigerant. Another possibility is what you have may be a heat pump. It may have worked fine as a heat pump. It has got colder and may have called for auxiliary heat. What type of auxiliary heat the unit uses is in question. If it does use fuel oil. You may have a leak. This leak could have caused the shut down. Easy to tell smell the oil. Fuel oil has a distinctive odor.

Heat pump and cooling unit is shifted by the use of a valve exchanging condenser and evaporator unit for cooling and heating. Fault might be due to failed oil separator down stream of condenser(which ever is used) or wet line resulting to total mixture of refrigerant and oil at expansion valve and evaporator. Definitely, one could tell oil was first solidify at evaporator by the time oil separator fails then the bursting of the lines follow at high pressure side.

I dont know why you even ask!

While electric appliances let the magic smoke out when they die it is different with the AC units which will let out smoke and fluids. You need to look if the smoke is out too.

Other than that:

.

You have a leak, call a pro!

If it is Heat Pump model please check the functioning of reverse valve . if it is an ac with heaters on it check the oil leak in condensing unit in consultation with the units trouble shooting manual.
