That was a Royal flustercluck. It looks like they underestimated the strength of the elevator shaft by a considerable amount. Most likely the shaft is reinforced concrete.

Now, as it stands, it is extremely hazardous to drill bore holes and place new charges. This is going to cost the Demo company in a big way to remove safely.
