I´m sure most of us have heard about the clever mathematics built in the pyramids of Egypt and the Aztec and Maya structures of Mesoamerica. I´ve been privileged to tour the latter and came out awed and mystified by the experience. Truly awesome structures they are, so many, so tall and massive and built with lead times of centuries. No doubt the ancients must have been obsessed with these mega projects that they paid no mind to the cost in human lives, natural resources and time. But what, I wonder, is in the rectangular base pyramid shape that so fascinated the ancient Egyptians and Maya?
