Section Modulus, Small Thin-Wall Steel Tubing

03/15/2015 4:58 PM

I called the manufacturer of a perforated steel square tube, size 1-1/4x1-1/4x14ga (0.0747"), to get properties, such as section modulus, S, but all they could tell me was the gage. I left the question on their recorder, but they haven't called. The tube has holes on all 4 sides, down the center.

I would imagine the strength is roughly 90% of a non-perforated tube, since the holes are down the center, where the neutral axis is. However, the smallest square tube in the AISC is 2x2x0.1875". Is there another source for engineering specifications on thin wall steel tubing such as this?

I didn't find the OP's requested data in those links; only some larger and heavier tubes.

I'll leave that to the OP. Another way is to calculate the properties from scratch.

Not my area, what is, but some more information is in order.

"Holes" leaves a lot open to speculation.

Especially when not dimensioned.

Well you have to know the steel type grade and other variables....

As Tornado suuggested in #4, you can calculate it and it's not difficult. It's never going to be exact as the 90% to allow for the holes is an estimate. You didn't say whether you want the properties in bending or torsion.

Also depending on what you're doing with it, buckling might need to be considered.

Buy some and empirically test it to determine if it is fit for purpose.

This is not heavy duty material your talking about....it probably just has to support some light loading, heaviest thing being a human or two.

Test it on the shop floor to see of it does what you want it to do and not permanently deform.
