03/17/2015 11:52 AM

I am looking for a stainless steel crimp or clip or ferrule that has to be open to be able to put it over two .032 pieces of wire mesh to act a a hinge. They have to fit snug. Thank you for any help .

Thank you but .032 wire x2 is pretty small and they don't make hog rings that small

If you don't like shoat rings, how about the 'C' or 'J' clips for assembling wire cages.

Thank you but they are all to big, I have done lots of searching from bunnies to jewelry and lots inbetween . I would want the clips or crimps to be no more than an 1/8 of an inch to 3/16 wide .

Click on the Products & Suppliers tab at the top of this page.

Enter stainless steel ferrule in the search box.

Choose tube fittings from the menu on the left side of the page.

Narrow the search results by adjusting the filters.

No, you're not. You're suggesting everyone else here does your searching for you. And when people do find stuff for you, you're coming up with reasons not to use it.

I don't play that particular game.

I would just get a piece of stainless steel strip the width you want and bend it...then cut to size....

...or something like this and cut it in half....

What about using appropriate-sized compression spring stock. Cut it to whatever length you need, and just spiral it along the edge of your wire panels. Pinch the ends in place, and voila! instant hinge.

Thank you that would probably work but could be a slow process, it has to be in a 1/4 " square . The wire is 4 mesh .032 . Now I weld three 1/16 cotter pins for the hinges and they work good i was just wanting to speed things up an get away from the welding.

What about stainless steel cable ties then, yhey can go down to a fairly small width.

What about stainless steel wire? What's the application exactly?

Large quantity, how many? What about getting a suitable snap-fit hinge custom machined out?

Thank you I have used wire hard to get it tight and uniform a snap fit hinge may work i have not heard of that ,That is part of the reason searches are hard to do if you don't know what things may be called ,. I make nesting sets of wire mesh cages that are filled with wood pellets for campfires fireplaces and wood stoves . www.reposenow.com

That is, I think, a pretty clever idea.

Is there any merit to the previous suggestion of a spiral wire in lieu of the searched-for clamps? With the spiral wire hinge, I can see a possible interference when these are nested together... is this any worse that what you are already doing?

What are you using now?

I replied to the spring idea and it may work but I think may be a slow process ,I weld 1/16 stainless cotter pins now for hinges with a resitance welder and they work well but I thought there might be a better way without welding . The fire logs work great and no bugs or disease to spread when you transport them from state to state which is illegal in almost every state or maybe all now. they are a wonderful alternative to firewood , RVers love them .

Re: Looking for Stainless Steel Crimps

This might still be the most durable method, but I can see how an increasing production requirement could necessitate a faster method. I still think you want to stick with something that is durable and represents the quality of the product you want to bring to market.

I'm thinking the cotter pin and the mesh would be consistent enough to 'automate' the welding process a little. Ever think of making a multi-head welding jig to do multiples at a time?

For some, it's not the thrill of designing the end-product - but rather designing the manufacturing equipment that makes it.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the input . I have thought about mutiheads for the welder but it can be a pain sometimes getting things just right to weld , I know it can be done but it will have to wait . I would think there would be a small crimp that would work with a self feeding gun but I may have to make one of those myself.

Have you gotten bids for them from a custom shop?

A two hit tool could make these for pennies after tooling costs.

I've had custom battery contacts made for a reasonable price. They were BeCu and plated, but..................................

No welding.

The shop would buy SS tape and cut and form it into a clip with an elongated C shape.

Sort of like the above but a profile to suit your wire size. and a suitable crimp tool.

You might ask a mfr of stapling machines for corrugated paper boxes if they have anything in your size range. Ribbon wire like that is probably the way to go.

Cut your wire so as to have a straight piece sticking out instead of the flat end, wrap as many of these as needed around the end of the next piece and cut flush the rest. No additional parts or expense.

I think you could use a small hog ring stapler....you might have to modify the tool end and custom order the rings to spec, but either electric of air powered would be fast....and they already make stainless steel rings....

Thank you I will have to send these folks a sample and see if they will work . I had sent them a sample before to secure the two edges to make a box but the nose of the tool was to big and didn't work but for this hinge it may since it can be folded back flat as long as the fit is not to loose.

If you had an open end at the top and bottom, these may work.

have you looked at slotted spring pins in SS? they could be crimped on easily.

Check out MSC P/N 09577990 1/16 dia and 7/16 length in 18-8 stainless
