Odds of a Perfect NCAA Bracket

03/16/2015 11:26 AM

If you watch American news then you're well aware that March Madness is upon us. But did you know that there are nine quintillion ways you can fill out that NCAA basketball tournament bracket?

Math professor Jeff Bergen shows the calculations behind achieving a perfect bracket.

He says your chances of being perfect are more like 1 in 128 billion if you know something about NCAA basketball. (I think my grandfather fits into this category... he had a second place bracket two years ago and won two pools last year!)

Just some food for thought when you enter that tournament pool!

the odds depends on the person who is betting.

Some of them work very hard at it (Stats) and is very serious about it........

Exactly... that may be the number of bracket combination - but not the probability of filling one out correctly, unless you flip a coin to make your decision. But one can easily impact those odds with a little knowledge...

The first bracket has 1v16, 2v15, 3v14, etc. and 1 has never lost to 16, ever. And 2 has a 90%+ history of beating 15, 3 has a 80%+ history of beating 14, and 4 has a 70%+ history of beating 13.

So I think historical precedence impacts odds, as well as your knowledge level of each team's ability, match-ups, player health, and the coaching ability to counter opposing team's plays.
