Great Engineers & Scientists

In 1676, Sir Isaac Newton wrote "If I have seen further it is by standing on ye shoulders of Giants." In this blog, we take Newton's words to heart, and recognize the many great engineers and scientists upon whose shoulders we stand.

So who do you think of when you hear "Great Engineer"? Let us know! Submit a few paragraphs about that person and we'll add him or her to the pantheon. Please provide a citation for the material that you submit so that we can verify it. Please note - it has to be original material. We cannot publish copywritten material or bulk text taken from books or other sites (including Wikipedia).

The Wright Brothers

The Wright Brothers achieved manned flight on Dec. 17th, 1903. Their engineering abilities brought about the age of manned flight and opened the doors to modern aviation, space flight and mankind has not looked back since.

"The genius of Wilbur and Orville lay not only in the singular act of getting a flying machine into the air, but also in the approach they evolved and employed to create the technology of flight. Their method of evaluating data gathered by testing an aircraft in flight, then refining the design based on those results, remains an essential tool in aerospace research and development."

If we are simply referring to manned flight then Orville and Wilbur are out by 50 years!! The first manned flight (but unpowered - it was a manned glider) took place in England in 1853. Check out these BBC news items featuring good old Richard Branson!! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3047164.stm and http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3042182.stm

I disagree, if we are referring to first "manned flight" then that honor must go to Francis Pilatre De Rozier and François Laurent Marquis d'Arlandes, who on November 21st, 1783, conducted the first untethered hot air ballon flight . The balloon with the two men rose 900 meters (it must have been terrifying for them!) and returned to Earth 8 km away 25 minutes later. Not surprisingly, the first thing they did when they landed was drink champagne, to "steady their nerves". I bet.

It's interesting to note that the Marquis was in fact an officer in the French Army. He was basically the first "test pilot".
