Multitaskers Tend to Be Less Productive

Posted August 25, 2009 8:13 AM

From Discovery News Top Stories : Discovery Channel:

The people who multitask the most are the ones who are worst at it. That's the surprising conclusion of researchers at Stanford University, who found multitaskers are more easily distracted and less able to ignore irrelevant information than people who do less multitasking. "The huge finding is, the more media people use the worse they are at using any media. We were totally shocked," Clifford Nass, a professor at Stanford's communications department, said in a telephone interview.

This is a completely ridiculous study. Why, I've multi-tasked for years without problem. I'm doing it now in fact.

And furthermore, peopl

I'm not surprised at all.

Apparently some people have noticed that talking on the phone and texting while driving and eating a sandwich contributes to fatal car accidents.

Why exactly should you expect one person to do multiple tasks well at the same time?

As an experiment just go in the bathroom and piss, and brush your teeth at the same time and see how things go.

Okay, you can cheat and look at yourself...

I believe it all depends on the the tasks at hand. Performing certian task that require numerous motor skills at one time can fail to be vey productive while in other cases some task can stimulate another. For instance I find that I focus a bit better reading while I am eatting. How many people can read dang near the whole cereal box at a breakfast sitting, but just grabbing the box and reading you probably wouldnt make it past one of the slim side panels before moving on. Then you have the example of texting and driving where too many of the same skills are needed which renders the efforts very dangerous in this case. Really you have to group your tasks according to the productivity level required or desired to get ideal results. Thus the success of assembly lines. Each stop or check point has a group of tasks to be complete some all at once some sequentially, but if you access the entire process more then one task is being completed at one time.

...so, THAT's why managers are so good at "multi-tasking," because they're actually NOT good at doing anything well.

...a JACK (or JILL) of ALL things and master of none!
