Lamp that Runs on Human Blood

Posted September 24, 2009 9:25 AM

From Boing Boing:

Mike Thompson's "Blood Lamp" is a single-use lantern that draws its energy from a drop of your blood, making you consider the cost of energy in a uniquely personal way.

For the lamp to work one breaks the top off, dissolves the tablet, and uses their own blood to power a simple light. By creating a lamp that can only be used once, the user must consider when light is needed the most, forcing them to rethink how wasteful they are with energy, and how precious it is.

My first thought: This is pretty cool invention that I would never be able to bring myself to use.

For this to really work in practical applications they need to come up with a lamp that isn't single use.

My second thought: So if this technology takes off, I can have a kid and tether him to my electrical box to power my house? This sounds like the first steps towards a little movie called "The Matrix."

"By creating a lamp that can only be used once, the user must consider when light is needed the most, forcing them to rethink how wasteful they are with energy, and how precious it is."

Apparently Mr. Thompson has never noticed the volume of single-use (or nearly so) disposable items found at his local big box retailers. But I support his sentiment.
