Brain-Wave Boost Sets Us to Slow Motion

Posted October 05, 2009 8:31 AM

From New Scientist - Online News:

Boosting brain waves can make people move in slow motion. This finding is one of the first to show that brain waves directly influence behaviour, and it could lead to new treatments for Parkinson's disease and other disorders that affect movement. Peter Brown and his colleagues at University College London generated a small electrical current in the brains of 14 healthy volunteers using scalp electrodes.

Wow! A whole 14 test subjects? Thats a huge sample group.

But interesting none the less.

RVZ717:

Using 14 volunteers in an initial study on effects of an applied stim"ulous is not unreasonable. because the stimulous is applied and the effecta are monitored at that same time, even if only a few of the volunteers exhibit effects, if could be significant. if all depends on how the study is set up.

This is far more reasonable than the sample of 10 families in 5 countries, that was reported in CR4, which concluded that people living near wind turbines suffered from ultra-low frequency sounds. the sample size may be similar, but can you see how different the studies are and how that might make a similar number acceptable in one study and wholely unacceptable in another?

benbenben,

Awww... You missed my sarcasm... Of course I realize variances in sample size will vary greatly depending on the test performed, and it is "acceptable" as you say.

However... "Acceptable" can also vary greatly depending on the individual "accepting what is in question.

I can guarantee if you were to randomly pull 14 people off the streets of downtown east side Portland, and administer UA's, 10 of them would test positive for marijuana. That certainly does not mean ~71% of the Portland population smokes it.... or do they?

Wait.... what were we talking about again?

Switching from sarcastic to just plain silly.

Hmmm...A while back, someone I know was suffering from a bout of depression, and wanting to go to a doctor for some medications...Based on what I know of the placebo effect, I convinced her to try a little "invention"- a device I found on the Internet as a simple electronic project to build. It consisted of a low voltage pulse generator (adjustable frequency) that output to two clips that one attached to the ear lobes (the one I built for my friend used some garish cheap ear rings for electrodes). I assumed the device was more gimic than science, but the effort of doing SOMETHING was intended to divert her from going the drug route. She swore it worked, which really puzzled me. Now, as I read this article, maybe there was something to it afterall...

Have you heard/read about TENS?

Hi JohnDG,

I have. My former girlfriend, as a result of having some fused vertebrae due to some car accidents, was in a lot of pain. I worked somewhat for her. I tried it and, probably, since I wasn't really in pain, found it quite unpleasant. With the electrodes placed correctly it will cause the target muscle(s) to spasm, giving some pain relief, though I don't know the mechanism. She used this in conjunction with massage, certain exercises, and medication.

Hi Mike,

We hired a TENS "machine" when my daughter was on the way - her mother was getting a lot of back pain. It didn't do much for either of us (I tried it too - gas & air was much better ).

I'd take that over TENS any day

During the antenatal labour ward tour, I was the only dad-to-be to step up & try the offered gas & air. Turned me into a giggling wreck in moments .
