What’s Next: Solar EV Charging Stations

Worried that your EV might be powered by electricity produced by burning coal? Then charge it at one of these new portable solar EV charging stations built by SunPods. This solution is being rolled out in San Jose, but could come to your city in the near future.

According to Autopia, "The installation marks the first time SunPods' SP-300 EV Plug-N-Go portable charging station for solar-electric cars has been put to a real-world test. Aside from needing an electrician to make the electrical connections, the technology is literally plug-and-play. After it's delivered from the factory to the site, it can be set up with no assembly required."

I can scarcely imagine what sort of marketing "genius" managed to produce the weird copy here. That solar panel looks to be about ten feet by thirty feet, so you can just about bet your sweet bippy that some assembly is required. Not that the assembly would be a problem, but why say such an irrelevant thing? Taking a guess that a favorable insolation value is about 7 watts/square foot, this panel might produce around 2100 watts. If you want to charge a 250 amp-hour 48-volt battery pack (to pick some rough numbers) from half to full charge takes 6000 watt-hours (125 x 48). Does anyone want to sit around for almost 3 hours to top off their batteries? And 4 customers during daylight hours? Welcome to GreenWorld, where arithmetic don't matter.

(No, I am not really so cynical about this, because there are indeed many good ideas; but there is so much DOA nonsense out there. Doesn't anybody check this stuff? And who rakes off the taxpayer-financed subsidies?)
