Call it Comedy or Conspiracy?

Posted October 24, 2009 7:14 AM

For every true life story there seems to be an accompanying true life conspiracy theory. Recent articles and commentary show that wild imaginations are again flying at the seemly innocuous effort of water exploration on the moon. What causes people to develop these fanciful and in many cases downright irrational versions of ordinary events? Tell us the top five well-known engineering-related conspiracy theories that shock you most.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Shock, Vibration & Noise, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Shock, Vibration & Noise today.

We'd never fired a missile into the moon before and we wanted to see what it would be like.

Actually, you remember that cult that committed suicide so the can catch a ride on the flying saucer that was hiding being that comet that was passing by?

They made it and were building a structure in that crater and we didn't want a bunch of crazies in the position of structuring weapons to point at the Earth so they had to be eliminated before they could progress any further.

That's the true story.

My favorite is the one put forth by the religious fanatic/wackos from Utah that the 911 attachs were pulled off by US operatives who had somehow managed to plant explosives in the Twin Towers prior to the two planes flying into them. They never bothered to explain how the terrorists were convinced to cooperate.

They did invent a new word, "thermitic materials"(not to be confused with thermite, a real substance) to help their misguided theory sound slightly more logical plausible.

Hi lynlynch,

........"thermitic.........

maybe this has something to do with a heat seeking spasmodic tic..........materials were only there to confuse the issue.

... not just fanatics in Utah. Plenty of websites raise questions about 9/11 that don't have good answers -- and may never.

I just Google'd and selected an example. I've never visited this site before, so I'm not promoting or endorsing it. Just by way of demonstrating that most conspiracy theories arise due to lack of sufficient and/or satisfactory explanations for important questions.

I was 12 years old when JFK was assassinated. Do I still think there are questions that will never be answered about that event? Yes. Do I think it is plausible that other people might have been involved or connected with this event besides a lone Lee Harvey Oswald? Yes. Do I think it will ever be proven. No. But my gut tells me it was more organized than a single person. Too many witnesses heard gunfire from more than one location. And blah, blah, blah. I don't spend any time researching the JFK event after all these years. Any questions concerning anomalies surrounding 9/11 were largely unnoticed by the general public.

Anyone who thinks that subterfuge isn't always alive and well hasn't studied history very much.

My post is related to the seriousness of the water search problem on Moon.

*Earth is the only planet with two third of its volume filled with water.

*It is great that the salinity protects water decaying by organic and bacterial sources.

*The solar radiations convert huge quantities of fresh distilled salt free water to the planet free of cost, except for the imbalancement of rain distributions at various parts of the planet.

*Lack of rain fall draughts at one region, flooding out unstorable rain water flow back to sea in many parts.

*If we could store these flood waters and distribute to needy areas and ensure long term fresh water supplies, could result in balancement of regional productivity and wealth.

*This needs pumping up storage to open large area reserves at the cost of pumping up electric power requirement.

*All these implementations should not be costing much more than expeditions to Moon.

*It calls for a judicial thinking and implementation strategies.

*Scientists should have a broader social thinking , generous global out look ,good will and steer genuine projects.

Hi Udhaya,

Long time back there was proposal to implement "Garland Project" in India to connect most of the rivers to control floods and draughts. It was never implemented. Mr.Prabhu minster in NDA Govt had worked on this project but with change of Govt. project was shelved. Polticians have their own interest in shelveing the project as there will no relief funds allocated for floods and draughts.

The ideal place to withdraw water for diverted use is the estuary site, where no one can dispute[as in the case of downstream users]. Apart from reliance on gravity flow which is a major hurdle to implement rivers linking scheme, if artificial pumping to strategic centers followed by gravity flow to desired destinations- perhaps make practical meaning.

It is upto the engineers to draft a practical and impressive plan.

Long term goodwill for future should be the role of the present generations. We are at this extent due to generous contributions by broad minded deeds of the past generations and the trend should be carried on.

The lead role should originate from responsible engineers.

Whether rivers linking is possible or not- the flood / run off rain water needs pumped up storage to strategic remote up-earth tanks.

That could solve our my series and crisis of water.

This balancing resources in all aspects like- energy, land use, water on a global basis should solve most of the global chaos and ensure a happy life for all people on the planet.

That should be the aim of technology and civilized growth.

"What causes people to develop these fanciful and in many cases downright irrational versions of ordinary events?"

Quick answer: untrustworthy people are usually the most suspicious & biased people with an agenda search for, hope for and often concoct scenarios to support their agenda.

"...untrustworthy people are usually the most suspicious & biased people with an agenda search for, hope for and often concoct scenarios to support their agenda."

That pretty much indicts every government that now exists or has ever existed, non? Or am I being terribly unfair?

How about Corporations? You can trust 'em, right? No hidden agendas there! Not when there's boatloads of money to be made!

How about the Media? Now that's one group who couldn't possibly have a hidden agenda, yes? Even while they're busily shaping public opinion at the direction of the highest bidder, you can trust 'em to be honest and truthful, right?

Wanna know my Quick Answer? Follow the money.
