20 Things You Didn't Know About... Sugar

Posted November 02, 2009 9:27 AM

From Discover Magazine | Health & Medicine:

Did you know that most of the sugar you eat comes from beets? And that sugar in deep space may be a chemical precursor to life on Earth? Find out these and more sugary facts.

1 The average American eats 61 pounds of refined sugar each year, including 25 pounds of candy. Halloween accounts for at least two pounds of that.

2 Trick: Sugar may give you wrinkles via a process called glycation, in which excess blood sugar binds to collagen in the skin, making it less elastic.

3 Or treat: Cutting back on sugar may help your skin retain its flexibility. So actually, no treats.

Hey, I feel cheated! That's only 6 things (2 and 3 are the inverse of the same thing- they don't count as separate items!), and I already knew about beets. You promised 20!

The full list of 20 is there you just need to scroll down.

The list is padded somewhat with startling 'facts' such as number 10

10 What kind of researcher sticks an experiment in his mouth?

What I want to know is how did they determine Glycolaldehyde, an eight-atom sugar, has even been found in an interstellar gas cloud near the center of the Milky Way? It's kind of far away isn't it?

Or are they talking about the center of a Milky Way candy bar in which case I wonder what the cost is of a candy bar with an interstellar gas cloud at the center is?

Actually it was by means of 'millimeter-wave rotational transitions' using the NRAO 12m telescope.

Very handy if future space travelers forget their tea sweetener.
