Computers Guide Traffic Lights to Reduce Congestion for Commuters, Other Drivers

Posted January 08, 2010 9:24 AM

From Wash Post Technology:

There probably are just two times when you think about a traffic light. When one just turned yellow. ("Can I make it?")When one has been red for too long. ("Come on, change!") Traffic lights, on the other hand, are much more thoughtful about you. They note the hum of your passing tires. They adjust to meet your needs. They sense your mounting frustration. It won't be long before they also know how many people are in your car and just where you're headed.

The original article ran in the Washington Post.

Tout it high whatever...

Many has been the times I'd paid money for face time with the programer...driving along without cross trafic when of a sudden the light changes because priority was given at a congested intersection miles away. Ya da Ya da Ya da gonna save fuel, right, sure....

Most traffic lights are dumb and positioned/timed/programmed by people who are no more intelligent. Classically there are many times when a filter light could be safely activated but it is not.

Our greatest transportation woe is the lack of vision when thoroughfares are designed in relation to the density probabilities of the areas served and the type vehicles using it. With these considerations in mind should we not require a management of the system to include an allowance of vehicular traffic densities at any given time in the system. Granted this may rankle some but can we truly have efficiency without a mechanism to prevent overloading the system (# of vehicles) also?

Yeah, the lazer cannon should be introduced sooner rather than later

Excuse me I'm sure where the vagueness originates or why I don't realize it

Morning and evening rush hours are a condition created because to many vehicles are on the road at the same time because everyone's work begins at about the same time. If the time of beginning of work were staggered the total traffic at any one time could be expected to less ya think.

Traffic experiments in the UK, Germany & Holland have has success in reducing accidents & improving traffic flow by removing traffic lights & other traffic controls. The theory is that drivers become complacent when following signals, removing the signals etc makes them think more about what they are doing.
