Standards — Who Needs 'em?

Posted January 15, 2010 8:05 AM

Support has been voiced for harmonized electrohydraulics design and application standards. Are unified standards required to elevate electrohydraulics alongside traditional hydraulic, mechanical, and electronic technologies? Are existing guidelines for electronics and hydraulics adequate for the most part in directing the development processes for electrohydraulic systems?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Hydraulics, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Hydraulics today.

"Support has been voiced for harmonized electrohydraulics design and application standards." By whom and for what purpose? Who will 'harmonize' the standards? What standards? I think we really ought to know!!! I am skeptical of anybody that mentions standards before knowledge. There are many people successfully designing electro-hydraulic systems now. Some of these systems do amazing things. I can post lots of links to successful systems if asked too. Knowledge is the key, not being 'harmonized'.

The historical problem with establishing standards for electro-hydraulics has always been that the various manufacturers attempt to hijack to process in order to favor their brands/technology. Look at how many valve-control systems have been pitched as "the new standard". Look at CAN-BUS, PROFIBUS, DeviceNet, et al.

Can we know what are the hydraulic standards that we have, and the question we have on them? It is better to have a guide line for all those who wish to do designs then could follow. It could be called as a standard or perhaps as a code of practice. All engineers will welcome such a thing. I too do not wish new introduction of trade barriers and labeling inventions which will stop the progress of the technology.

"Can we know what are the hydraulic standards that we have, and the question we have on them?"

That would be good. That involves spreading knowledge about the standards we have. The orginal poster said nothing about making the current standards known.

" I too do not wish new introduction of trade barriers and labeling inventions which will stop the progress of the technology." I fear Guest Post #3 is right about the intentions of the people behing the orginal post. It basically is a marketing game played by big companies that makes a new standard in an attempt make what has worked well in the past look not standard. This is easier to do than make better products or to better document their existing products.

When have you ever seen a transfer function for a hydraulic pump? How about the capacitance a length of pipe or hose?

No one has responded. Who are these voices? I want to know? It is obvious that there is little or no support voiced for harmonizing anything. These response will not cease until 'the voices' identify themselves.
