Robotics Prof Fears Rise of Military Robots

Posted January 15, 2010 9:52 AM

From Slashdot:

An anonymous reader writes "Interesting video interview on silicon.com with Sheffield University's Noel Sharkey, professor of AI & robotics. The white-haired prof talks state-of-the-robot-nation — discussing the most impressive robots currently clanking about on two-legs (hello Asimo) and who's doing the most interesting things in UK robotics research (something involving crickets apparently). He also voices concerns about military use of robots — suggesting it won't be long before armies are sending out fully autonomous killing machines."

His last name is Sharkey, so he must know what he's talking about!

Honestly though, I am always weary of this too. However, I know little about robotics and watch wayyy too much television.

On the plus side, while originally the function of such robots would be to kill humans, it won't be long before the focus instead becomes creating a new series of robots designed to kill the human-killing robots and then newer ones designed to kill the robot-killing robots - and so on - and this will soon eliminate humans as the target.

On the downside, all the various robot-killing robots probably won't care or even notice that humans get caught in the crossfire.

So once again we'll be the tiny mammals scurrying about between the toes of the giants - I like it.

I'd let a robot that looks like this kill me any day.
