Redundant Fastening Revisited

Posted January 21, 2010 7:52 AM

GM announced a recent recall of 22,000 Corvettes because of the possibility that the roof could fly off. Obviously, lots of owners weren't thrilled. Apparently, the problem was an inadequate adhesive, so a new replacement material is in the works. That raises the question: should mechanical fasteners be used in conjunction with adhesives as an added safety factor in some designs? Or, should design engineers conduct more in-depth testing first? How would you solve this challenge?

They have been building cars for how long now and they still cant get past the model glue aspect of doing proper assembly?

Its no wonder they tanked it a while back because they don't build things right and thusly got their butts handed to them by everyone else.

Are they working their way to government bailout 2.0 in 2012?

Maybe if they change the part numbers again that might help?

The sunroof on my 25 year old Porsche is a FRP molded piece. It has metal nuts embedded in it. They can come loose in a bad fire (when the piece turns into unbonded loose fibers!) but otherwise hold on the attachments well, nearly forever. It is my guess that a SMC sheet, pressed into shape and bonded to some brackets is a bit smoother than FRP, and much cheaper to make. You have to wonder: in a zillion-dollar car, is a $100 (with a bit of body finishing labour included) FRP cover too expensive?
