Generator eats garbage, poops energy

Posted February 06, 2007 6:21 PM

From SCI FI Tech:

Solving two problems at once, researchers at Purdue University are working on a generator that creates useful energy by munching up all sorts of garbage. Dubbed the "tactical biorefinery," it's being designed with soldier's needs in mind. They can tote this thing around to not only give them mobile electricity, but to take care of their garbage as well. It doesn't seem to care what kind of junk you stick into it, which is pretty amazing. Just tip that trash can on in and power your plasma TV for a couple of days. It supposedly creates 90% more energy than it uses, which is damned impressive. Alright, when can this be ready for consumer use? A device that both gets rid of waste and creates energy without putting a strain on the environment is pretty incredible, and it's something that should be fast tracked to the market.

"It supposedly creates 90% more energy than it uses, which is damned impressive."

Cut the crap! It is NOT CREATING anything, let alone 90% more that it uses.

The "tactical biorefinery," merely converts the energy in the waste to a different form that can be readily use. If it were to perform, as mistakenly hyped, it would have "the energy problem" solved once and for all!

I believe that what was meant was that it only uses 10% of the potential energy contained in the rubbish consumed to power itself, the rest (90%) is surplus and available for other uses....

I understood exact what was meant, but it was probably not clear enough for all concerned.....people should take time to learn write more accurately (I am speaking from my own personal failures in this area!). Re-read everything!!

Looks a little heavy for a soldier to carry!

Looks like a great idea, from a bunch of knuckleheads who have never soldiered nor have a clue what kind of trash a bunch of soldiers generate. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for recycling, using biofuels, etc., but I think they are going after the wrong market with this one.

A bigger one of these should be used as a drop off point for all our garbage trucks. Incinerators were too dirty but big units of these generators which are eco friendly would alleviate the need for giant landfills and garbage barges dumping at sea.

WOW .. this is increadble . I wnat one!! I was actually thinking of making one myslef all my life! Hmmmmmm what could it be that makes all that energy? Acids, nuclear decomposition, burning the waist? There must be some kind of quanta plasma flux capacitor used there..hmmmm I think i should watch some more StarTrack and i will get back to you guys with the real answer hahahahahahaha

IF it comes from a science fiction site, I don't know, maybe I'd take it with a grain of salt.

Believe none of what you hear my friend, and only half of what you see. I can see combat soldiers being interested in an energy source..........maybe one a little more portable than what is presented. If your shooting and being shot at is the environmental impact of your actions near the top of your list of concerns?

What kind of black art is used to mystically "create" energy from a variety of potential waste sources and does not discriminate regarding the nature and variable concentration of the waste resource.

Pretty incredible is an apt description.

An article in the March 2007 issue of Popular Mechanics relates how a plasma torch is used to convert miscellaneous mixed garbage to Syngas and a molten glass residue.

Economics of system take into account the differential cost of current trucking and tipping fees versus cost to converter, and the waste and power consumed in the process.

The system has no other waste products such as CO2 etc.
