Open vs Closed System and Products

Posted January 31, 2010 7:43 AM

On the manufacturing side, engineers have said for decades that proprietary software and hardware design drives up costs. So, can we convince OEMs that following an Open System protocol can be worth it economically? Perhaps we can take a tip from the consumer appliance sector; enter Google and its new cell phone. The biggest differentiator of Google's recently announced cell phone (see video) seems to be its break with the industry's closed-loop model. The phone promises to run any application on any network. The Washington Post says the move coincides with FCC concerns about exclusive handset and roaming practices and net neutrality. Can Google's move convince OEMs to do the same?

Depends on the how the business and marketing plan is set up. On proprietary software, some plans look at it for generating after sales revenue as a market.

So you mean one size does not fit all situations. Wow. What a new idea.

But I thought a good business would look at all possible scenarios and then choose the optimum profit plan while my competitors would wither away and die. Now I could make my customers pay through their noses until a new business formed with a better business model. But wait the new model maybe more profitable than my model now. But my model I proved was the most profitable, that's why I survived. But my new rival is more profitable than my most profitable model. Entering endless loop mode, zip burp. Arrrgh.

End simulation.

End sarcasm mode.
