Do You Like Quiet Vehicles?

Engineering a quiet ride for today's vehicles is quite a challenge according to Physics Today because of the numerous parameters involved (characteristics of pavement materials, tires, interactions between the two, measurement, etc.). A recent article cites tire-pavement noise as the predominant factor in overall vehicle noise. Toward reducing noise overall, what should get more attention: vehicle, pavement, or tire design? Should automakers take the lead?

A Tesla Roadster will run circles around any other street legal car and many racing cars. So now the car nuts have a quandry - which is more important: noise or speed?
