Technology Hides the Hearing Aid

Massachusetts researchers have tested a signal-processing chip that may lead to a fully implantable cochlear hearing device. The battery-powered SoC recharges wirelessly in two minutes and lasts eight hours. An integrated sensor converts middle ear bone vibrations into electrical signals which are then transmitted to the cochlea. In a related development, the Fraunhofer Institute reports a "stacked" microsystem. The ultra-low-power module incorporates 19 components, including antenna and radio transmitter.
