Coming Soon: "Neuromorphic" Chips

Posted July 21, 2014 4:34 PM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Mobile device developers are waiting anxiously to get their hands on "neuromorphic" chips, which are modeled on biological brains and designed to process sensory data, such as sound and images, and respond in ways not specifically programmed. MIT Technology Review calls these revolutionary chips, which wireless giant Qualcomm is demonstrating to developers, one of the 10 breakthrough technologies of 2014. Find out how these chips differ from traditional processors. Envision a smartphone that knows when you want to hear music or learns from your past voice commands not to take calls from telemarketers during dinner.

Good for audio? I would love to see how these might be used to improve digital signal processing in my hearing aids. For example, recognize my wife's voice and turn off amplify everything she says so that I am sure to hear it.
