Flashlight Transforms into Submachine Gun

Posted February 15, 2010 8:08 AM

From Boing Boing:

Firearm designer Magpul Industries prototyped this flashlight that transforms into a submachine gun. They demonstrated the weapon, called the FMG-9, in 2008 but apparently haven't yet put it into full production. "Fits right in (your back pocket) when you got for a walk. If it gets nasty, you get down to business." Video by Mil-Spec Monkey.

Well, that'll be the end of carry-on flashlights!

Cute. It's true a sub-gun isn't very concealable, but this one, which is really a modified automatic pistol, is pretty well disguised. Still, a heavy caliber semi-auto handgun is at least as concealable. I carried a Glock Model 21 in the small of my back for years. Furthermore, a handgun in the hands of someone well-trained and practiced in it's use is, I think, a far more practical weapon.

Remember, the original submachine guns, the German Bergman MP18.1 closely followed by the more powerful American Thompson, were originally invented towards the end of world War One for trench warfare, where engagement ranges were often a matter of a few feet, and sometimes a matter of inches.

Subguns remain popular with law enforcement and military personnel, and bad guys when they can get them. They can provide overwhelming short-range fire-power but, they tend to encourage overconfidence, especially in the hands of the un-trained and under-practiced. Thus the expression, "spray and pray". Also, as with any handgun cartridge, their practical range is little more than 50 meters. Still, the weapon does have it's place when things get up close and personal, such as repelling boarders or clearing a roomful of terrorists.

Personally, I prefer to keep my distance. Say, 800 meters with a scope-sighted 7mm magnum.

guys, read the comments on that video post, that part where the guy doing the demo pointed the muzzle on himself while unfolding/folding it. maybe the thing is not very user-friendly after all.

I'm surprised KrisDel didn't come out with this years ago.

Can I have one in semi-auto please?
