Will 2012 Shock Our World?

Posted February 20, 2010 10:24 AM

OK, it sounds pretty like a line out of a Sci-Fi movie, "the world will end in 2012". This type of statement has been prophesied countless times in the history of mankind, but do you personally think there is any truth to this claim? Supposedly predicted by the Sun worshiping Mayan Indians, this date with destiny is scheduled to coincide with the upcoming Solar Max around 2012. Will the Sun have some shocking affect on our planet?

I expect a bigger shock from the U. S. elections in that year, (although I make no predictions on their outcome beyond that).

We might have some electrical disruption from a large solar flare, but I would not see any connection to the Mayan calendar. Present-day Mayan descendants say the claims are hyperbole, and that the calendar, being cyclical, just starts over again with a new Year One.

More seriously, it appears to me that certain things predicted in the Bible as events taking place before Judgment Day have already happened. If that is so, the end of the world could happen any time, be it tomorrow, 2012, or thousands of years from now. (Of course, in the absence of prior timing information, a one-time future event with a probability of exactly one is still unpredictable.)
