Going Green is Business as Usual

Posted March 07, 2010 8:17 AM by Sharkles

For those who think that turning your HVAC business into a green shop means abandoning old business practices for new ones, listen to my dad. A 74 year old upstate NY contractor who works a 60 hour work week, produces an ear-to-ear grin every time he receives an RFQ for a LEED-financed commercial construction project. It always includes a green or sustainable HVAC system. Says, Chris Compton, CEO of HVACREducation.net, "It's crazy not to embrace green. It's not like you're expanding into an entirely different line. Green HVAC is just doing the job the way it's supposed to be done." How are you embracing the green movement for your HVAC contracting or engineering firm?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from HVAC, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to HVAC today.

I couldn't agree more. Except that I am in the electrical power business. When governments and businesses demand a higher level of installation (and thats actually what they are asking for) contractors should always grin. Since it requires you to furnish a more expensive product that is marked up by a percentage. That means a higher profit level for your company.

I feel the same way about licensing and regulation of laborers. We shouldn't complain when it requires the hiring or promoting workers to a higher wage scale. After all don't we fit their scale into our charges and send them forward for payment on a percentile mark up?

I would like to suggest that green hvac discussisons should include residential chiller boiler products. These systems reduce carbon footprint by 40% and hydronic heat is more comfortable.

I agree with Gray Haired Old Goat statement. I couldn't phrase it better.
