Posted September 28, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Bruce Willis crawling through air ducts in Die Hard. Nerve gas getting released into the HVAC system in 24. Scores of movies where ducts are used for escape routes and attack points. Hollywood often includes plot points hinging on HVAC systems. But how often do they get the details right? Heating/Piping/Air Conditioning Engineering decided to find out. Professional engineer Ron Wilkinson takes a detailed look at the depiction of HVAC systems in 11 movies and two TV shows including Mission: Impossible, Entrapment, Dr. No, and Star Wars. Want to know what he found out? Here's a hint: Hollywood takes a lot of liberties.

"But how often do they get the details right?"

Never. It's never that clean inside those ducts.

Not like Orson Welles got it right 77 years ago when the country screeched to a halt in the wake of a radio drama.

That was a hard act to follow.

The review is quite thorough, but why bother?

We surely all know that Hollywood is illusory entertainment at its best. Why would any actor commanding $20m per movie allow themselves to be put into a distressful situation anyway? Not as if that's what they get paid for.....that's the reason why the Terminator stated "Ill be back".....smoke and mirrors, friends, smoke and mirrors.......artistic licence is backing up the script, and I for one remain entranced by the result, although I should perhaps know better. In any case, there is no inner beauty judgement here, its all 'shock and awe'.
